Hi Again

Am a total newbie to Mageia so be gentle

I have an O2 UK Huawei E173 dongle which is not detected in Mageia, therefore I am unable to connect to 3G broadband.

I have a samsung Q1 running latest Mageia with updates installed.

Any assistance would be appreciated.... As I said I am a newbie, and if you are going to ask me for any information, could you let me know how I get this info if it involves using command line scripting, I came from PCLINUXOS so know a bit, but always from forums....

Without your dongle plugged in, in a terminal window, type

tailf /var/log/messages


then plug your dongle in, wait a few seconds (until no new messages appear), and post all the output here. Please put your output in a code block (use the "Code" button in the "Post a Reply" window).

The 'su' command will ask you for a password - it needs the root user password you set up when you installed Mageia.

Thats what I get, I think I understand that my dongle is loading the drivers - modem - reading SD card. I have tried usb-modeswitch but getting confused.... Thanks

Check the second last post in this topic and if it works for you please file a bug report.

Created the text file and copied the code and saved.
Diconnected and reconnected the modem and even re-booted. Still not detected..... If you need to know the /var/log/messages now or any other code, I can do this when I get home this evening.....

I looked at the link I gave you and see that the code is split into two lines whereas it should be all in one long line.

I have ensured the text in the 98-huawei.rules is in one string but I am still not getting it detected.... is there anything I may be overlooking, or is there a way of totally disabling the external SD card as I dont use it as that anyway?? (Hopefully, that would stop it switching to recognise the card.)

I don't think there is any way to disable the storage mode on the device other than switching each time it's powered up.

ok, i have tried all the above, and had no joy, I re-installed linux mint, and it worked but other things would not.... (argh, re-installed windows but it broke), now I am back at square one. I remember installing a specific 3G software on my friends eeepc a couple of years ago when she was having similar issues..... anyone know or can hazard a guess at what it was called, I was thinking of trying that..... Its a great testament to mageia that I have re-installed and not persavered with pclinuxos, which I use on my laptop and desktop, my laptop being another touch screen HP-TC4400

When i tried my first dongle back in Mandriva times, i've used sakis3g: http://www.sakis3g.org/
May be worth a try, and easy to use. But you may need to uninstall usb_modeswitch if you have that installed currently, but i'm not sure about that.

I am going to Russia in 3 days and have decided to re-install linux mint for the time being as I dont have the time to fiddle. I know it works in that.... I am however about to install Mageia on my HP TC4400 which is touch screen and I am sure I will be back on with issues with that... :-0 . Thanks for all your help on this though.... Hoping when the new release of Mageia hits us, it may work out of the box, cos I love it.
