Wifi dongle Archer T2U Plus not working with rtl8812au drive

Postby rtl19 » Nov 13th, '23, 01:36

Hi, I just installed Mageia 9 and tried to use my Archer T2U Plus dongle but not having much luck. The distro comes with version 5.6.4.2_35491.20191025 of the rtl8812au driver which appears to be the most recent version. My Mageia is using kernel 6.4.16-desktop-3.mga9.

Performing an 'iw wlp1xxxx scan' never returns. Unfortunately, I cannot get it to connect or see any networks. It doesn't return any errors. After cloning and compiling the dkms driver successfully, the same result of not seeing any networks is happening.

Any suggestions?

Have you tried the dongle on another computer?

Output of
Code: Select all
lspcidrake -v
and also
Code: Select all

fyi - the dongle is in a computer that dual boots windows 10 and linux. When booted to windows, the dongle works fine.

Various requested outputs:

lspcidrake -v
Code: Select all
lspcidrake -v

You may want to read https://wiki.mageia.org/en/Setup_wireless_networking#Structured_troubleshooting_for_wireless_issues_-_WORK_IN_PROGRESS
The second command should show relevant log messages what the adapter is doing (or not doing) and also show which firmware it uses. As root
Code: Select all
journalctl -ab | grep -iE "fw|firmware|iwl|wifi|wire|80211"

Ok. Some good news, I successfully cloned the latest version of the driver and got it dkms installed. It turns out the cloned version was not reporting the right version info so I thought it was still the old version.

I also have the scan returning some networks. Curiously, my 5Ghz network is showing up but not my 2Ghz network. I wonder if there is a setting/option i should be using.

Mind to share the output of
Code: Select all
modinfo rtl8812au

Although there are quite a few issues about only 5Ghz not working:
https://github.com/sebanc/brunch/issues/823
https://forums.gentoo.org/viewtopic-t-1 ... art-0.html
You could try connecting to the SSID directly, they simply might not be visible but collectible.
Or you could try changing the regulatory domain to your region/country, as not all wireless channels are allowed in all countries. If this doesn't match with your access point it could be sending on a channel that the wifi adapter cannot see.

Re: Wifi dongle Archer T2U Plus not working with rtl8812au d

Postby laidlaws » Dec 8th, '23, 17:22

I have a slightly different problem. An old dongle would not work, so I purchased a recent model. It ran well with a driver from Git:
Code: Select all
https://github.com/morrownr/8812au-20210629

I installed it using the DKMS option. There is only one small problem: the driver is rebuilt on every bootup, unlike the nvidia driver for example. That is as far as my knowledge extends. It seems to be a misfiguration somewhere, but all permissions look O.K. Where should I kook next?

In the dkms.conf that comes with the driver. Have a look at https://wiki.mageia.org/en/DKMS_packaging_policy and adapt the dkms.conf accordingly, it's really not that difficult.
But the question about dkms is probably a topic for a different thread.
