FTP: The file is not a directory

GNOME desktop.
When I connect by FTP with programs Files or Thunar to a server, then sometimes it happens, that the file transfer hangs in an error message:

Error wile copying "MyFoldername".

Error while copying the file into ftp://.../path/folder.
The file is not a directory

Code: Select all
[Cancel][Skip All][Skip]

I have already tried to disconnect and connect again. There seems to be some cache active.

This incident happens sometimes when I rename the top folder "myFolder" into "myFolder1". Then I copy by FTP a new version of "myFolder" back to the server.

I have discovered this error already about 10 years ago. It seems never to be fixed.

You already posted this in the german forum previously in https://forums.mageia.org/de/viewtopic.php?f=7&t=3429 no ?
Concensus was that you should take a look at the caching, settings and the local filesystem of the FTP server side, and also try a different client which is more suitable for FTP.

And if you don't report this in a way so this is reproducible for others, how do you assume this will be magically fixed ?

Yes. Thank you for the link. I have searched for more than 15 minutes and could not find it any more. Too many topics have been mixed in the above thread.
I had also a problem with the search on this forum. "The file is not a directory" as a search entry gives too many results.

The first point is however no solution. I have not admin rights on the server.
I try to stick with the GNOME Files and Xfce Thunar if possible.
Most FTP connections do not have this problem.

But I am not able to give others access to a problematic server. And this error is not even reproducable most times on it.

Well, if it's not clearly reproducible, how do you expect that this will be fixed, if you didn't even report it as a bug upstream ?

I'd say use a different FTP server, use a different protocol or solution or use a different client.
If you don't want to change the client, and don't report that issue in a reproducible way upstream, you'll probably have to live with it.
