D-link Nano Wireless adapter in Mageia 7 (Solved)

PostPosted: Jan 11th, '19, 17:25
by hviaene
I could not get this device working in Mageia 6, because of a problem when compiling the driver.
This issue is solved in Mageia 6, but I got an even stranger problem now.
When I try to make a wifi connection with it in MCC- network manager, my wifi router is listed allright, I can enter the connection parameters, but then making the connection just fails.
Looking for info how to handle from the CLI, I found some info, so I did:
# ifconfig wlp0s29f7u4 up
That went OK
# iwlist wlp0s29f7u4 scan
Shows 25 possible connections, but my router is not listed in it (I am sure it shows up each and every time in MCC network manager)
So quite consistently I cannot make the connection with iwconfig, I get "Error for wireless request "Set Encode" (8B2A): Set failed on device wlp0s29f7u4 ; Invalid argument.
Any help????

Change: with the latest kernel from the updates installed, now the command
iwlist wlp0s29f7u4 scan
Lists my wifi router, at least the 24.GHz essid, not the 5GHz essid.
But that still does not get the connection working, I find no feedback anywhere, but maybe looking in the wrong place???

At the CLI.

If you open a terminal and as root issue journalctl -f there, then run the wifi commands in another terminal, does the journal tell something interesting?

are you sure the dlink nano is 5 gig capable, is it the DWA-131.

https://www.newegg.com/global/uk-en/d-l ... 6833127293

looking at above it only specifies 2.4 gig.

also looking at this it looks like that dlink adapter is a bit of a fudge of the rtl8192eu, and wont work with the standard one, if my reading of this is correct.

https://github.com/Mange/rtl8192eu-linux-driver

in all honesty it may be easier long term to buy something that works out of the box with linux.

hopefully someone can recommend one on here, ive just looked about and there are mixed reviews about wireless AC and linux , but the last review was 2018 and we now have kernel 5 round the corner with mga7

if someone can definitely say abc adapter works, then buy it and save yourself a load of pain

this review may be helpful but not a guarantee it will work

Well, the box of it has a note on the backside which reads : "The product may be operated in home and office environments using both the 5 and 2.4 GHz bands. And yes it is marked as model DWA-131. But it is definitely not the device you refer to in the link you find. Mine is somewhat smaller and completely square, not rounded.
I will try the driver from github, and post the result here.
Tx anyway for your help.

Why do you install those manually? Did you already forget about your previous thread for this chipset, or this is for a different chipset?
See viewtopic.php?f=25&t=12403

If it's a different chipset then at the very least post the PCI product & vendor ID's with e.g. lspcidrake -v

No, I did not forget bout this previous thread, but the situation is different:
1. This thread is on Mageia7, not on Mageia6 anymore
2. In Mageia7, the device is recognized allright, so it seems, but in Network manager it does not pickup any of the available Wifi's in my neighbourhood at all.

So I was trying to follow the advice of wintpe, and that's where I get stuck.

The situation seems to be now that, with the same version of the driver, M7 behaves a lot better with this device than M6, but it is still not fully operational.
The underlying reason why I keep pushing at this problem, is that I got this device from one of my "customers" which I weened quite successfully from MS (he wouldn't think of stepping back) and this device works OK in MS Win. Bad publicity.

It might help if you would at least post some basic information, like which driver and which firmware is currently used, apart from ifconfig / iwconfig / iwlist output (which is pretty much meaningless without context, as it does not show the actual issue why your system behaves that way)

The device is listed in MCC - Hardware as Wireless N Nano USB Adapter, (on the box D-Link Nano model DWA-131, but apparently there are different models under the same name, mine should support 2.4 and 5GHz); the manufacturer code 0x2001, the device code 0x3319, the module rtl8xxxu. Package rtlwififirmware 20190514 installed. The device shows up in lsusb command.

Hi hviaene

Thanks for posting what Doc asked for , it really helps people know exactly what device you are using as there are loads of variations.

while this update from me is a little off the point, i think its still good advise, and an answer to your statement about

"The underlying reason why I keep pushing at this problem, is that I got this device from one of my "customers" which I weened quite successfully from MS (he wouldn't think of stepping back) and this device works OK in MS Win. Bad publicity."

you should never buy anything and then expect it to fit your requirements, its the other way around. its like buying shoes and then finding there two sizes to small for you and trying to squeeze them on.

you buy something that is specified to work.

so when you build a PC or chose a laptop for linux, you make sure first that alll its components are supported by linux, you are on a wing and a prayer working the other way around, and its no good making comparisons to MS.

The manufacturers would have probably supplied a device for windows version x-y, beyond that unsupported, like the sound blaster live 1024 cards, which are still working perfectly under linux, no longer work under windows 7 and above.

unfortunately i dont have one of these devices otherwise id try and get it working for you but all the hardware i buy works under linux, i check first.

im sure you have checked google, theres a couple of people having issues with this part (https://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=2351720)
the reason i pointed you to this github artical is it suggested that only that custom version of the driver contained the ID 2001:3319 but that was 2014, still no guarantee that linux excepted that code into the tree, the ubuntu link also seems to suggest that they had a newer dkms driver that supported it.
sometimes (and ive seen this on realtek gear before), a near module will match the hardware and try to set it up, but if its not the right one, some part of it just wont work.
a dkms is the only way you should add a custom driver to mageia then it then survives most kernel updates, dont drop compiled code on an rpm based system.

regards peter

Tx for your effort. Your reply made me think again. As you pointed out i n your post of June 18, the driver as found in your refs should/could be the rtl8192eu driver. As you see in my report above, M7 assigns the rtl8xxx driver, which is probably not correct.
Now the M7 repos includes the dkms-rtl8192eu package, which I was not aware off until now. So I installed the package, rebooted, saw in the verbose startup "Building rtl8192eu" and no errors or warning. Neither with
journalctl -b | grep rtl
But M7 keeps assigning the rtl8xxx driver. So my next question is: how do I enforce the rtl8192eu driver????

On a more philosofical path, you write "you buy something that is specified to work." But how the hell do I know that???? I know there is a list of known compatible HW, but I found in the past more than once a device that worked quite OK but did not appear in this list (I added to the list). So each time some device shows up, it is sort of a jump in the deep whether it will work or not. And as i said before, my customer had this device working OK in MS, before he made the switch to Mageia. I got all his other gear working quite well, except this @@### USB stick, and this annoys me more than I like.

Not aware until now? I've previously pointed you back to your other thread about this chipset, where you already had this exact issue, about dkms-rtl8192eu and blacklisting rtl8xxxu ...

Sifting thru journanctl I found : build failed. I overlooked that because it does not show up in the verbose messages of the boot process. Starting the build does, but not the outcome.
Anyway, starting the build from the CLI pointed me to the make log and there I find:

Apparently that bug was the trigger I needed. As I noted in the bug, with the driver rtl8192eu finally installed and active, the device works OK

I plead guilty, although not completely. I hadn't chacked the bugs, so I was not aware of that bug 22599.
But ...... will that lead to get the correct and/or complete rtl8192eu in the repos, or are there legal blocks on the road??

No legal roadblocks, it's just that someone needs to update the package.
