[SOLVED]dkms-r8168

[SOLVED]dkms-r8168

Postby dthompson » Dec 28th, '17, 03:30

I really wish I had done a backup before upgrading, I have only been able to get X twice
(and both times locked up in less than a day, I like 30d+ uptimes)
This is just like '97 and slackware -- but worse
About a year ago my eth0 stopped automatically connecting, had to start net applet and click connect
At this point in time I am booting into 3, because of nvidia driver issues, hours and hours and hours of them
lsmod shows r8169, I don't know what net applet does, but it works
Other distos have dkms-r8168, automatically connects, for example (not mageia)
--------
[d@localhost ~]$ sudo lsmod |grep 816
r8168 487424 0
-------
But I have to
wpa_supplicant -Dwext -iwlan0 -c/etc/wpa_supplicant.conf -B
dhclient -4 wlan0
and it works,, but......
lspci |grep 816
03:00.0 Ethernet controller: Realtek Semiconductor Co., Ltd. RTL8111/8168/8411 PCI Express Gigabit Ethernet Controller (rev 06)
can't give jounalctl, not booted mageia

Your post is quite confusing, a bit about X not starting, a bit about upgrade issues (what upgrade, from mga5 to mga6 or something different) and then a bit about ethernet issues.
Please keep those topics separate - as a general hint and golden rule: Please only one problem per thread ;)

At least add the output of
Code: Select all
lspcidrake -v|grep -i net
as your output is missing PCI vendor/product ID.

And, as root:
Code: Select all
systemctl status network.service -al -n150
journalctl -ab | grep -iE "fw|firmware|iwl|wifi|wire|80211|816"
Cauldron is not for the faint of heart!
Caution: Hot, bubbling magic inside. May explode or cook your kittens!

Not booted mageia, will try again later
lspcidrake -v|grep -i net
r8168 : Realtek Semiconductor Co., Ltd.|RTL8111/8168/8411 PCI Express Gigabit Ethernet Controller [NETWORK_ETHERNET] (vendor:10ec device:8168 subv:1458 subd:e000) (rev: 06)
The bit about X,, if I can't get into 5, but only 3, then no ethernet
When it gets to 5 (X) , also no ethernet, but
When it gets to X, start net applet, click connect, it connects
As I said, other distros have dkms-r8168, it just works then
Something must have changed about a year ago, before that it just worked
Maybe you know what net applet does to make it connect?
upgrade was from 5 to 6, I really regret not making a backup

At first you should probably go through your /etc/sysconfig/network-scripts/ifcfg* config files:

Dec 28 23:59:33 localhost network[6021]: [FAILED]

And regarding this, would be worth going through /etc/modprobe* configs if you have any options defined there

Code: Select all
journalctl -ab | grep -iE "fw|firmware|iwl|wifi|wire|80211|816"
Dec 28 23:58:53 localhost service_harddrake[5260]: adding alias eth0 to r8169

I'm not sure what net_applet is doing specifically on your system, you may have to run it interactively and check the logs again to see what it did. I'd have to check the code but I believe it doesn't have any verbose or debug mode to show what it does.

Booted in mageia6,, much aggravation and adventure
But the eth0 works now,, I don't know how to mark solved?
Editing ifup-eth0 and modules made no difference,, but
NetworkManager works in cli, the only thing I think it did was add/change a file
/etc/sysconfig/network,, containing

HOSTNAME=localhost.localdomain
NETWORKING=yes
CRDA_DOMAIN=CL

I looked at timestamps, can't see anything else
edit: a little later, modprobe.preload has ,,, evdev
and modprobe.conf has

alias enp0s18f2u4u3 r8169
alias eth0 r8169
alias pci:v000010ECd00008168sv00001458sd0000E000bc02sc00i00 r8169

and that last line is probably the answer

Now, if X more or less behaves....
(I have never before see it spontaneously change vt7->vt1, 3x now, most amusing)

Please mark the thread accordingly by editing the topic of the first post and prefix it by [SOLVED], thanks

Please create a separate thread for that.
