[SOLVED] Ethernet long time to connect

[SOLVED] Ethernet long time to connect

Postby grallis » Sep 24th, '11, 01:21

Hello all. First off, I'd like to say I just installed Mageia, and my initial impression is very good. It's a very good looking and responding operating system thus far, so my thanks to the Mageia team for putting this OS together.

One problem that did arise however, and currently is the only thing keeping me from using Mageia more regularly is, it takes varying amounts of time(normally far longer than is acceptable) to connect to my home network via my Ethernet card. It started out connecting right away, then slowly got worse and worse over the past couple of days until now it can take close to ten minutes to connect. It takes anywhere between three to ten minutes to connect to my network.

I'm using Mageia KDE 4.6 / Kernel: 2.6.38.8-5
Ethernet: Realtek RTL8111/8168B

I'm sorry, I'm new to Mageia and Linux in general, and not sure what other information would be required or where to find it.

I prefer to have my connection manually configured, but I've also been using DHCP instead to see if that would remedy the problem, and there is no difference in connection time between the two. I've also tried deleting that connection and creating a new one with no success.

Thanks in advance for any help :)

A few observations :-
1/ When you say connection started off fast but then got slower makes me wonder if there is a physical problem with your cabling.

2/ If you are using static addressing then connection should be instantaneous. Do you mean that you cannot browse to a web site for a long period of time? If so then try browsing to
http://209.85.229.105 does that work when http://www.google.com does not? If so then your problem is with your DNS server. Configuring Mageia to use a different DNS server like OpenDNS would fix it.

3/ If the problem is not your DNS then looking at the log may help to diagnose the problem . Using the command line to view the log would look like this.
Open konsole from menu>Tools and enter
Code: Select all
su
tail -n 200 /var/log/syslog | grep eth0

Ok thank you for the reply, djennings! No cabling problem - I've been using my other partitions which include Mint and Win 7 instead of Mageia for quick internet uses from a shut off state.

DNS is not the issue, as my network is not connected at all.

I'm off to work now, but will check the log as soon as I get back. I'll then report what my findings are. Thanks very much for your help!

Not sure what you mean by that. Getting connected is what you are trying to achieve isn't it?
If your DNS is misconfigured then you will not be able to reach any web sites with a browser, or browsing may be very slow.

When you get home you might also like to check out these commands
Code: Select all
ifconfig eth0
more /etc/resolv.conf

Ok, thanks djennings. I'll look into it when I get back. I didn't mean to sound stern if I did, just that I have the same manual config for all my OSs ... Win 7, Mint, Ubuntu and CentOS. Just didn't expect it to change is all. Thanks again.

Maybe just try changing the DHCP client? Some time back, there were issues with the default dhcp-client.
Just try out dhcpcd, it's really lightweight, and can be changed in Mageia Control Center.

Also, if it takes 10 frigging minutes to establish a connection (i assume establishing a connection
means getting an IP) i'd just switch with Ctrl+Alt+F12 to the virtual terminal where you can see what happens.
Doing this always if there are issues connecting to my wireless AP.

Thank you for your help, both. Problem solved - dhcpcd has solved the issue I was having. Much appreciated!
