l2tp/ipsec

Does anyone here have a mageia system working as a server for l2tp/ipsec? I'm having trouble getting it going. I have not managed to find a tutorial that takes me through the theory of operation, the reasoning, and the logic. What I have found is a mish-mash of things, mostly cookbook style for specific distros and specific network topologies, and sorting it out is turning into a real PITA.

this is centos, which mageia is very close to anyway, so lots should be the same.
