[DONE} install Broadcom 43142 wireless driver offline

Postby atari130xe » Aug 25th, '15, 18:52

Hello forum, this is my 1st post here, A coworker has a Lenovo Flex 2 D14 Laptop, and Mageia 5 runs fantastic on live mode, but wireless support does not work. Is it possible to install Broadcom 43142 (Hybrid chipset - Wireless / Bluetooth) offline (without a wired connection)? I Mean Can I download drivers and dependencies from the internet, put them into a usb pendrive and the install them using console? If yes it would be great if someone could guide me step by step in order to make it work. Remember there is no ethernet connection neither wireless just plain offline installation.

here are the latptop specs: http://shop.lenovo.com/eg/en/laptops/lenovo/flex/flex-2-14d/#tab-tech_specs

Thank you in advance!
Jose

Yes that is possible. Can you please show the output of
Code: Select all
lspcidrake -v
within live mode

Should be able to install them even from the live mode depending on which one you have. I have a HP Stream11 with the same chip and was able to install from the live medium, and then they installed as working when I installed the distro.

Yes. You can do it manually or if you have Mageia on other PC it's realy simple to do with urpmi
Code: Select all
# urpmi some_package --no-install --download-all /where/to/save/package

Example with "vim" package
Code: Select all
mkdir /tmp/vim
urpmi vim --no-install --download-all /tmp/vim

Code: Select all
[root@localhost xxblx]# ls /tmp/vim/rpms
lib64bonoboui2_0-2.24.5-8.mga5.x86_64.rpm
lib64gnome2_0-2.32.1-14.mga5.x86_64.rpm
lib64gnomecanvas2_0-2.30.3-8.mga5.x86_64.rpm
lib64gnomeui2_0-2.24.5-8.mga5.x86_64.rpm
libbonoboui-2.24.5-8.mga5.x86_64.rpm
libgnome2-2.32.1-14.mga5.x86_64.rpm
libgnome2-schemas-2.32.1-14.mga5.x86_64.rpm
libgnomecanvas-2.30.3-8.mga5.x86_64.rpm
libgnomeui2-2.24.5-8.mga5.x86_64.rpm
vim-X11-7.4.430-7.mga5.x86_64.rpm

Same actions you can do with any others packages.

Two weeks ago I installed Mageia on laptop with broadcom wifi. I downloaded with urpmi dkms-broadcom-wl and copied it to laptop on usb pendrive.

doktor5000, I am not the OP but I have the same problem, while trying Mageia with:
Mageia-5-LiveCD-KDE4-en-i586-CD.iso
and would like to know how to install the Broadcom 43142 driver while offline.

(As an aside, I am also trying to use an HP Stream 11, as mentioned in the post following yours, but when I ran the MCC and looked at the hardware, MCC asked if it should load bcma (which, as I understand it, does not include support for BCM 43142) and, though answering 'yes', Mageia indeed did not find a network device.)

Following your first step, here is the output of lspcidrake -v

This is my first try with Mageia. I was pointed to Mageia by a post on another forum where this same Broadcom device was causing difficulty and someone advised that Mageia seemed to be able to see the device.

As you can imagine, I do not have connectivity with this HP Stream 11 Notebook PC because it only has this wifi device, and it also only has 2 USB ports; I am running Mageia from a USB stick in 1 of those 2 ports, the other USB is vacant. I copied the output of lsipcidrake onto an SD card (machine has an SD card slot, as well) and used that card in another machine to post the contents. That slot could be used to insert another driver file, and (I hope) could be the method for offline installation.

Please have a look at this thread for your device.
viewtopic.php?f=25&t=7211

This is how I did it, fetching all the packages required for broadcom propr. wireless driver.
Code: Select all
url=http://ftp.snt.utwente.nl/pub/os/linux/mageia/distrib/cauldron/x86_64/media/nonfree/release
mkdir broadcom_init; cd broadcom_init
wget ${url}/broadcom-wl-common-6.30.223.141-11.mga5.nonfree.x86_64.rpm ${url}/dkms-broadcom-wl-6.30.223.141-11.mga5.nonfree.x86_64.rpm

As I used the free DVD, had to pull some more packages:
Code: Select all
wget $(lynx -dump -listonly $url | grep -i -e dkms\-2 -e dkms-min -e wireless -e $(rpm -E %_lib)iw -e wpa_supplicant -e psclite1| awk '{print $2}')
wget $(lynx -dump -listonly $url | grep -i -e gcc\-cpp -e $(rpm -E %_lib)mpc3 -e $(rpm -E %_lib)ncurses\-devel -e libstdc++\-devel -e /make\- | awk '{print $2}')

Then try to install all those packages with urpmi to see missing dependencies.
Code: Select all
urpmi ./*.rpm

Thank you for the extensive instructions. I couldn't find the files that you suggested. At that url, it seems to me that the
broadcom-wl-common file is

...mga6...

Is this a problem?

You suggested the x86-64 directory. Will it be ok to use the i586 directory, instead? (Apparently this machine has some kind of issue booting into X86-64 binaries - or so I have seen reported, so I'm targeting an install of i586, after some live tsting.)

Yeah sorry, my instructions were for 64bit cauldron, the Mageia development release. For i586 and Mageia 5 you would need to adapt the URL to
Code: Select all
url=http://ftp.snt.utwente.nl/pub/os/linux/mageia/distrib/5/i586/media/nonfree/release/

Doktor, this has been helpful; we have the wifi electronics energised, and are able to 'ping' on the local subnet, but when running Firefox to reach a webserver (also on the local subnet), Mageia 5 freezes (and sometimes the caps-lock light flashes). We encountered some problems installing the driver, and it may not be properly installed. Details follow:

The mini-script did not seem to fetch the files

Code: Select all
[ron@localhost broadcom_init]$ url=http://ftp.snt.utwente.nl/pub/os/linux/mageia/distrib/5/i586/media/nonfree/release/
[ron@localhost broadcom_init]$ wget -d $(lynx -dump -listonly $url | grep -i -e dkms\-2 -e dkms-min -e wireless -e $(rpm -E %_lib)iw -e wpa_supplicant -e psclite1| awk '{print $2}')
wget: missing URL
Usage: wget [OPTION]... [URL]...

Try `wget --help' for more options.

Manually fetched these files from the repository:

MCC now finds the Broadcom 43142 electronics, and notes that the 'wl' driver is employed for it.

MCC permits me to setup the WiFi characteristics, manual IP address etc. As mentioned above, ping works, but trying to reach a local server causes Firefox to lock up. Doktor, I am happy to look around the IP-level settings to make sure the settings are correct for Firefox. But I am still unsure whether there are driver-level issues. Could you advise how I might check what
unsatisfied dkms[*]
I should perhaps search for?

Just in case this matters, is there a way I can check what kernel is running here?

Seems I noted only half the stuff I did, and it's also quite logical. The nonfree repository only contains the proprietary broadcom wl driver packages:

Sure, uname -r or uname -a will tell you. And best please also post that here, along with the following information so we can have a look at why those lockups appear.

Which desktop environment are you using? Do you use net_applet or NetworkManager?
And please provide the output of the following commands:
Code: Select all
lspcidrake -v | grep -i -e net -e wireless -e wifi
ps -ef | grep -v grep | grep -ie net -e wpa

and, as root:
Code: Select all
ifconfig -a
netstat -rn
rfkill list all
systemctl status network.service -a
journalctl -ab | grep -iE "fw|firmware|iwl|wifi|wire|80211"
ping -c4 8.8.8.8
host 8.8.8.8

Re: Can I install Broadcom 43142 wireless driver offline ?

Postby doktor5000 » Oct 11th, '15, 17:21

Just saw that now:
ronleach wrote:Mageia 5 freezes (and sometimes the caps-lock light flashes). We encountered some problems installing the driver, and it may not be properly installed.

That's an unrecoverable kernel panic. Since I switched to a new mainboard (asus z97 pro wifi a/c) I also have to use the broadcom wl driver, and with the older 3.1x kernels I had some kernel oopses during boot due to the wl driver, but it worked just fine.

Although I don't use the binary (precompiled) dkms modules called broadcom-wl-kernel-version but I only use the dkms-broadcom-wl driver, as described above.
Best get all those packages installed, and then reboot and provide the information asked at the end of my previous post.

After downloading (which proceeded without problems), installing still thought some files were missing or were mismatched. Here's the output:

Edit: I'll look around the repository for files that will satisfy these. I'm not sure about the 'unsatisfied dkms[*]' complaint, though. This had occurred earlier, but the fetch we used doesn't seem to have solved the problem. End edit.

You suggested I rebooted, but I'm running on a live (USB) iso so, thinking that rebooting would 'lose' those installs, I didn't do that. I did continue with the tests you suggested - though I imagine these will be less informing because the install is incomplete. Nevertheless, I will post the results in the next message in case they are of help.

Finally, because the local pings worked, I tried
http://192.168.0.95 // the local httpd server on this subnet
in Firefox. Same result as before, that FF connected, but then the machine froze, with the caps lock light flashing. But unless the driver is completely installed (the previous post records installation failures), I am not sure that the kernel could expect to work smoothly.

Seems you used some minimal installation, so the package "patch" is missing:

Code: Select all
[doktor5000@Mageia5]─[20:28:26]─[~] lynx -dump -listonly $url | grep -i -e /patch- | awk '{print $2}'
http://ftp.snt.utwente.nl/pub/os/linux/mageia/distrib/5/i586/media/core/release/patch-2.7.4-1.mga5.i586.rpm
[doktor5000@Mageia5]─[20:28:54]─[~]

You may also need the libmpfr4 and libstdc++-devel packages, by the looks of it.

If there are messages at the beginning about "Some requested packages cannot be installed:" then you know you're missing some dependencies.

Those issues seem to be the problem, like driver crashes.

Re: Can I install Broadcom 43142 wireless driver offline ?

Postby ronleach » Nov 1st, '15, 18:15

I have not yet been able to install the Broadcom wl software. I have have been trying to install the driver, and then install each individual 'missing' package that I have been able to locate on the 'release' software site:

http://ftp.snt.utwente.nl/pub/os/linux/ ... e/release/

When I try to install the Broadcom wl driver, and the dependencies that it has, or dependent files have, asked for, the system asks for two files that I cannot find in the repository.

These are the files I am trying to install:

Code: Select all
broadcom-wl-common-6.30.223.248-2.mga5.nonfree.i586.rpm
broadcom-wl-kernel-3.19.8-desktop586-3.mga5-6.30.223.248-33.mga5.nonfree.i586.rpm
dkms-2.0.19-34.mga5.noarch.rpm
dkms-broadcom-wl-6.30.223.248-2.mga5.nonfree.i586.rpm
gcc-4.9.2-4.mga5.i586.rpm
gcc-cpp-4.9.2-4.mga5.i586.rpm
glibc-devel-2.20-20.mga5.i586.rpm
kernel-desktop586-devel-3.19.8-3.mga5-1-1.mga5.i586.rpm
kernel-desktop586-devel-latest-3.19.8-3.mga5.i586.rpm
kernel-desktop586-latest-3.19.8-3.mga5.i586.rpm
kernel-userspace-headers-3.19.8-3.mga5.i586.rpm
libmpc3-1.0.2-4.mga5.i586.rpm
make-4.0-6.mga5.i586.rpm
ncurses-5.9-21.mga5.i586.rpm
ncurses-extraterms-5.9-21.mga5.i586.rpm

The response from the urpmi command is:

Code: Select all
Packages kernel-desktop586-latest-3.19.8-3.mga5.i586, ncurses-5.9-21.mga5.i586 are already installed
Some requested packages cannot be installed:
dkms-2.0.19-34.mga5.noarch (due to unsatisfied kernel-devel)
dkms-broadcom-wl-6.30.223.248-2.mga5.nonfree.i586 (due to unsatisfied dkms[*])
kernel-desktop586-devel-3.19.8-3.mga5-1-1.mga5.i586 (due to unsatisfied ncurses-devel)
kernel-desktop586-devel-latest-3.19.8-3.mga5.i586 (due to unsatisfied kernel-desktop586-devel-3.19.8-3.mga5)
Continue installation anyway? (Y/n)

The missing files seem to be:

(i) ncurses-devel - which I couldn't find in the repository (though I tried ncurses but it was already there, anyway); it seems to be needed as part of the gcc package for the kernel-devel, and doesn't appear to be in the backports or testing sections, either

(ii) kernel-desktop586-devel-3.19.8-3.mga5 - which I also could not find (though kernel-desktop586-devel-3.19.8-3.mga5-1-1.mga5.i586 is there but needed ncurses-devel) but have tried to install kernel-desktop586-devel-latest-3.19.8-3.mga5.i586 in its place, but fails (as per the report).

Some of the files mentioned earlier in the thread do not seem to be needed, at least, not so far. One other change is that I am running from the LiveDVD now, rather than from the LiveCD. Kernel is 3.19.8-Desktop586-3.mga5 .

Is there anything I can do to resolve the request for the ncurses-devel file?

Well, it should be working with the LiveDVD, as it already includes the binary driver. Did you try to setup a connection yet?

This is what you need: http://ftp.snt.utwente.nl/pub/os/linux/ ... 5.i586.rpm

Huh. I'd assumed the driver wasn't prebuilt on *any* media. Thank you, very much, for pointing me to that.

Yes, the machine sees the chipset, and loads the 43142 driver.
It doesn't see the wifi service (2 metres away).

Clicking the network icon, no wifi services are listed and the machine says
Code: Select all
Unable to find network interface for selected device (using bcma driver)

MCC (Hardware tab) reports that the driver in use is 'bcma' (I'd expected wl, but the machine is seeing the chipset) and recommends I install bcma-config, I clicked 'yes'. No joy, still doesn't see the 'network interface'.

I think the machine is seeing the chipset, but does not seem to get much further.

(I haven't reverted to trying to build up the driver myself.)

Is bcma-config the correct package to use?

You need to blacklist bcma driver (and possibly others) - see e.g. viewtopic.php?p=58386#p58386 on how to do that.

Tantalisingly close, Doktor.

I performed:
Code: Select all
# modprobe -r b43 bcma
# modprobe -r brcmsmac bcma
# modprobe wl
modprobe: FATAL: Module wl not found

In the linked thread, the advice is then to run MCC/hardware

Doing so the 'ethernet' (it is only wifi on this HP Stream 11 laptop) section reported all the 'codes' but reported
Code: Select all
module: unknown ('unknown' is in red colour)

I followed the advice to blacklist the bcma drivers
Code: Select all
echo -e "blacklist b43\nblacklist bcma\nblacklist ssb\n" >> /etc/modprobe.d/blacklist-mga.conf

but I did not reboot - because I am running from LiveDVD and I assumed that the LiveDVD is a read-only device and would not retain this entry in /etc/modprobe.d/blacklist-mga.conf across a reboot.
(Is my assumption correct?)

After blacklisting, I repeated the modprobe sequence,
Code: Select all
# modprobe -r b43 bcma
# modprobe -r brcmsmac bcma
# modprobe wl
modprobe: FATAL: Module wl not found

with the same result.

I repeated MCC/hardware and, again, MCC did not load wl, reporting that the 'module' for the wifi was 'unknown'.

It seems very close. I'm sure it works, but for some reason I am not quite getting there.
I would be most interested in any comments, and especially if 'rebooting' after blacklisting would work across a reboot; I haven't tried that, yet, because I thought to keep the machine in this state in case there is value in doing so.

Well, for the live media that will not work. The purpose of blacklisting kernel modules has the effect that those are not automatically loaded during system boot (but they can still be loaded afterwards manually).
So instead of blacklisting them in live mode it is sufficient to simply unload the "conflicting" kernel modules as you did, but that was not your problem.

Problem is really that the wl driver is not contained in the live media, I just checked. So you need to use the precompiled driver packages for testing.
You need broadcom-wl-common and the other package has to match your kernel. As an example, you mentioned "Kernel is 3.19.8-Desktop586-3.mga5" then you would need broadcom-wl-kernel-3.19.8-desktop586-3.mga5-6.30.223.248-33.mga5.nonfree.i586.rpm ( and the -latest package broadcom-wl-kernel-desktop586-latest as a dependency to enable automatic updates)

For an x86_64 live media you would need to adapt the URL ... just tested with the x86_64 KDE LiveDVD and the packages installed fine,
and hence modinfo shows the properties and supported options for the wl kernel module.

Code: Select all

Re: Can I install Broadcom 43142 wireless driver offline ?

Postby ronleach » Dec 31st, '15, 18:01

Doktor, thank you for that advice. In the end this route failed for me. Again, these steps resulted in the symptoms as above, appearing to begin working, but the kernel panicked and flashing the caps-lock light.

Looking around, I found a document on Broadcom's site, describing an update to their wl driver

https://www.broadcom.com/docs/linux_sta ... 23.271.txt

which specifically advises
Code: Select all
NOTABLE CHANGES
---------------
Upgraded to support 3.19 kernel APIs.

I thought this might be the route because my symptoms could be seen as some Kernel problem, coupled with the specific hardware on this HP laptop. The Mageia5 driver is older than this version and I thought for a while about trying to build a driver myself. But I've never done that.

I did some more searching and found that Fedora already had a pre-built 6.30.223.271 driver in their fc23 repo. Now, I use Fedora on a few laptops so I had a go at running a live FC23 on this HP device, adding the updated wl driver from Fedora's non-free repo; it worked.

Doktor, in the end I installed Fedora 23 onto this HP Stream 11 laptop, because it was the only way I could seem to get the Broadcom 43142 chipset working within the HP hardware.

I wanted to post this note not only so as to have a chance to thank you for all your help (and patience) - I've learnt such a lot while pursuing this - but also to provide some experience in case the Mageia community or devs were also encountering these kernel 3.19 problems with the Broadcom chipset, or even were merely thinking about whether to adopt the later Broadcom wl package release or not.

Finally, for all the readers of this thread, it is very clear that it is possible to install a Broadcom 43142 driver while offline (the original scope of this thread) by following the steps that doktor5000 set out. However, unless that driver is fully compatible with their kernel and their hardware, WiFi may not work correctly.

Gratefully, Ron
