[SOLVED] Remote Desktop viewer

[SOLVED] Remote Desktop viewer

Postby Garthhh » Jul 7th, '11, 16:35

I'm trying to view my mageia[m1] machine from a Ubun 10.10 boxes[u1,u2] on my home network
my other 2 machines detect each other & connect fine
I have the permissions set up the same on all 3
m1 won't detect or be detected by u1 or u2
I suspect I need to sign into the keyring on m1
how would I do that, since I've never been prompted?
all 3 are gnome desktops

What program do you use, what is your network setup, and what are the firewall settings of the Mageia box?
And what are you exactly talking about, about remote desktop or network shares, because you write "i can't see the network"
but in remote desktop programs you connect directly via computername or IP adress?

I'm using gnome desktop
system>preferences>remote desktop
set to allow other users to view & control my desktop
Applications>internet>remote desktop viewer>connect
set protocol to vnc
doesn't find any machines

if I try the same procedure on my ubuntu box
I find this machine as
etho IPv4 mgarlo's desktop on local host

the other machines on my local network are listed
etho IPv4 garlo's desktop on garlo

when I try to connect to mgarlo
the error is
Avahi resolver failure: Timeout Reached

clearly there is some setting that needs to be changed
it is probably somewhere in
MCC>network & internet

I haven't set up any firewalls or shares as yet
everything is default on this build which is about a week old

Please show the output of ifconfig, also from one of the Ubuntu machines.

Seems to me you only need to set the host name, you do this in Mageia Control Centre -> Network -> Add an interface
and choose your current interface (ethernet i suppose) and simply go through the steps, until the step where you can
enter a hostname. Set a meaningful hostname and leave everything else as it is, then after you save this please reboot.

In the remote desktop viewer, try connecting to this IP: 192.168.1.2
This is the IP adress of the one ubuntu machine you posted. Does that work?

that doesn't work but does make me notice something
you can on a working set up use the dropdown in the host box
which will show all the possible ip addresses from the router
[both computers are connected to the same router]
I only see this one & it's trunkated
compared to what would work on one of the ubuntu machines

I open RDV discovered the address of garlo
typed that in
on the host box here[mgarlo]
gives me a failed connection error
typing the address in does work on the ubuntu machine

Could you please post a screenshot from that dropdown box on Mageia, and one from Ubuntu so i see what you mean by truncated?

the address shown [the 1st screenshot] is an ipv4
I think the stuff after :: has to do with the port

:: means an IPv6 adress consisting all of zeros, or in long form: 0000:0000:0000:0000:0000:0000:0000:0000
If you want to supply a port number, isadora is right, that would be like that 123.123.123.123:12345

Sorry, i can't help you further there, never used Gnome Remote Desktop Viewer.
What do you get from the mandriva box with
Code: Select all
ping mgarlo
ping 192.168.1.3
ping 192.168.1.2

ping mgarlo
64 bytes from mgarlo (127.0.0.1): icmp_req=55 ttl=64 time=0.121 ms
a seemingly endless string, with icmp_req=55 counting up

same from
ping 192.168.1.2
&
ping 192.168.1.3

oh there's a setting somewhere on MCC that's wrong
suppose I'll toddle off to vinagre & see what they have to say
thanks for the help

This shows your hostname gets resolved locally correct and you can physically reach the ubuntu box.

Success!
I had to turn off the firewall
so I'll need to figure out how to make an exception for RDV
I had written the developer

Here's the reply, which explains a few things about the way Vinagre remote desktop viewer handles ip addresses

Hi Garth, please ssee my replies below.
- Show quoted text -
I had a read of the forum thread, and I have a few comments. The double-colon is indeed used as the port separator in Vinagre, unlike in most other applications. It is also possible to leave the port number off the address, and Vinagre will use 5900 as a default.

I am a little confused about the exact steps that you went through in order to reach the ‘connection failed’ dialog, and it seems like there are several possible problems. Am I correct in saying that when you run Vinagre on one of your Ubuntu machines, it cannot find the remote desktop server running on your Mageia machine, when you click the ‘Find’ button in the connect dialog? Also, the reverse is true, in that when you click the button on the Mageia machine, it cannot find the Ubuntu machines?

If what I said above is true, it appears that you have a firewall or other networking problem on the Mageia machine. I am not familiar with network setup on Mageia, so it might not be possible for me to help you, but I will try.

not quite solved
but real close

So you need to open that port in the firewall on your Mageia box.

To do so, activate the firewall again, In Mageia Control Center -> System -> Set up your personal firewall -> Advanced
and enter the following for Other ports:
Code: Select all
5900/tcp

This assumes you only use the default port at the ubuntu machines (i.e. you don't specify anything other than the default)
Save and you should be able to connect. To get the avahi autodiscovery working, you should select "Network services autodiscovery (zeroconf and slp)" checkbox
in drakfirewall main screen.

Perfect
firewall back in place & active

the Mageia set up works better than the Ubuntu version
Mageia respects my RDV settings, whereas ubun make me sign to gnomekeyring on the remote machine, no matter what

mark this solved

Thanks again Dok

on a slightly different note, I'll bet there's documentation for MCC
why doesn't it connect from help?

No problem. At the moment, AFAIK, there is no documentation because of the Copyright from Mandriva,
and from the creator of the documentation, a firm called NeoDoc, but it's being worked on.

I can only refer you to the original Mandriva documenation for the draktools:
http://doc.mandriva.com/en/2010/Drakxto ... uide.html/
Also available in french:
http://doc.mandriva.com/fr/2010/Drakxto ... uide.html/

These are not really up-to-date, because Mandriva didn't want to spend money on that,
but better than nothing, i guess.
