usb wireless modem problem

usb wireless modem problem

Postby laki » Oct 17th, '12, 22:13

I am using Mageia 2.
My usb wireless modem does not work.
When it is plugged in, it is detected in the Network Center as:
gprs/edge/3g HUAWEI mobile
But it can't be connected. I have tried with the MCC too, with the same result.
I am using the right configuration data, since it works on fedora-17.

The command 'lsusb' shows that the usb device is detected as:
Huawei Technologies ...etc.
I have upgraded the following 2 packages:
usb_modeswitch-1.2.3-1.mga3
usb_modeswitch-data-20120531-1.mga3
But there is no result.

Can anybody help ?
I really like Mageia-2, but I need the usb wireless connection too.

So is there any error message?

Yes, the error message in the Network center says that the sim card is missing (or something like that).
In the MCC the error message is:
"Problems occurred during the network connectivity test.
This can be caused by invalid network configuration, or problems with your modem or router.
You might want to relaunch the configuration to verify the connection settings."

But as I said, the configuration is ok, since the usb modem works in fedora-17 with
the same configuration data.

Thanks.

please insert your dongle, wait ten seconds and check if there are errors in /var/log/syslog.

you could also see in dmesg if yor USB device is regularly converted to modem
and where it is mapped (/dev/ttyUSB0??)

dmesg gives a similar output. I can't see where it is mapped.
I also tried what doctor5000 suggested.
comgt -d /dev/ttyUSB* ---> no output. I had to quit the console.
comgt -d /dev/ttyUSB0 gives:
Code: Select all
Enter PIN number: 3547
Waiting for Registration..(120 sec max)..
Registered on Home network:
Failed to register

comgt -d /dev/ttyUSB1 gives:
Code: Select all
 ***SIM ERROR***
Check device port configuration.
Check SIM is inserted
Test SIM in a mobile phone?

comgt -d /dev/ttyUSB2 gives:
Code: Select all
SIM ready
Waiting for Registration..(120 sec max)
Registered on Home network:
Failed to register

comgt gives:
Code: Select all
Trying list of devices
SIM ready
Waiting for Registration..(120 sec max)
Registered on Home network:
Failed to register

I can't say that I understand much from the above outputs.
Is that helpful to you?
Thanks.

Re: usb wireless modem problem

Postby aledigit » Nov 20th, '14, 16:34

I have the same problem with Mageia 4 32 bit and Alcatel X230s usb modem. Dmesg report the follow regarding the modem detection:

Code: Select all
usb 3-1: New USB device found, idVendor=1bbb, idProduct=0017
usb 3-1: New USB device strings: Mfr=3, Product=2, Serialnumber=4
usb 3-1: Product: HSPA Data Card
usb 3-1: Manufacturer: USBModem
usb 3-1: SerialNumber: 1234567890ABCDEF
....
usbserial: USB serial support registered for GSM modem (1-port)
option 3-1:1.0: GSM modem (1-port) converter detected
usb 3-1: GSM modem (1-port) converter now attached to ttyUSB0
option 3-1:1.1: GSM modem (1-port) converter detected
usb 3-1: GSM modem (1-port) converter now attached to ttyUSB1
option 3-1:1.2: GSM modem (1-port) converter detected
usb 3-1: GSM modem (1-port) converter now attached to ttyUSB2
option 3-1:1.3: GSM modem (1-port) converter detected
usb 3-1: GSM modem (1-port) converter now attached to ttyUSB3
option 3-1:1.5: GSM modem (1-port) converter detected
usb 3-1: GSM modem (1-port) converter now attached to ttyUSB4

Using the commands:

Code: Select all
comgt -d /dev/ttyUSB0
comgt -d /dev/ttyUSB1
comgt -d /dev/ttyUSB2
comgt -d /dev/ttyUSB3
comgt -d /dev/ttyUSB4

I discovered that the modem works only on the ttyUSB4. I think that Mageia network manager doesn't map the modem on the correct ttyUSB, in my case ttyUSB4.

Any idea on how to solve this annoying issue? Thanks.
