[SOLVED] Wifi seen but not connecting mageia 3

[SOLVED] Wifi seen but not connecting mageia 3

Postby justnewb » Jun 9th, '13, 19:35

Hi, I searched this forum for some answers and found Rodgoslin post very similar to my problems with the same messages received. Prior to this I tried to resolve the problems using the response to another members's post.
which was basically the same as Rodgoslin's .
Open MCC and configure your wireless device so that it's controlled by NetworkManager.
3. Reboot.
4. Right click on the small icon in the bottom right corner that shows you hidden icons and choose settings.
5. If needed unlock widgets.
6. Mark the checkbox that enables network configuration.
7. You should see new icon that enables you to configure networks.

But this did not appear to work but perhaps i failed to execute it correctly, as because of the wired connection a little applet is already there, and i was able to go to network connections from this. I had also tried setting everything to auto install, with & without the network manager being ticked, and also manually setting with & without the network manager being ticked.
I had difficulty getting my onboard wireless card to work in M2 but had no problems with my usb dongle.
In view of this I tried the realtec dongle and initially had problems because, not having the internet I had not downloaded the packages for my laptop. The message I received then was: RTLwifi Firmware not available File missing /lib/firmware/rtwifi/rt|8192sefw.bin After installing the packages I still did not get the internal wifi card working.
and the usb realtec dongle produced this message: Unable to find network interface for selected device. looked in Hardware and the driver was listed as RTL8191s not RT8192 (the missing file) I then went to RPM distributions and found Wifi radar 2.0 508-3mga3 noarch rpm for mageia i586 and installed this. if this is not correct can you please tell me where to look for the network interface/driver thanks.
Internal wifi card Atheros AR242x/Ar542x.
Also the ethernet wired connection works perfectly, however i dont know if I should have it connected while trying to connect either of these wifi cards. Please advise thanks.

Can you please summarize what your actual problem is currently?

Hi Doktor. sorry i will start again: laptop. connection via Ethernet cable works fine
I would like some advice to help me connect my laptop to the internet wirelessly. This is the situation to date.

Internal wireless card Atheros is recognised by the system but I cannot get it to recognise or connect to the router.
This is the error message: Problems occurred during the network connectivity test.
This can be caused by invalid network configuration, or problems with your modem or router.
You might want to relaunch the configuration to verify the connection settings.
I have tried various suggestions given to forum members with the same problem who had received exactly the same error message as me, however they did not work

External USB wifi dongle is also recognised by the system but I cannot get it to recognise or connect to the router.

When the internal wifi card failed to work I used a usb wifi dongle that had worked easily and well with Mag 2
It also failed to work and I received an error message citing a missin file: RTLwifi Firmware not available File missing /lib/firmware/rtwifi/rtl8192sefw.bin Try non free repository
At this point I remembered that with not having an internet connection I had forgotten to d/l the core packages.

After installing the packages I tried again to get the internal Atheros wifi card working but failed. I then tried to get the USB wifi dongle working and received the following message: [i]Unable to find network interface for selected device. [
I checked the hardware device file and it quoted the driver as RTL 8191. I assumed that the packages had installed an out of date driver and that I needed the driver RTL8192 as quoted in the first error message ref: missing file. (see above)
I spent a considerable time trying to find and access the repository but was unable to find the file/driver. RTL8192 Eventually I found the RPM Distribution site and the only thing listed as wifi was; Wifi radar 2.0 508-3mga3 noarch rpm for mageia i586. I hoped the driver might be included in this package or its dependants so I d/l it. I have since discovered that it is a tool for scanning for networks so hopefully it will be useful if i could only find it on my system.

There is an network icon at the bottom right of the screen indicating the ethernet cable connection. should I disconnect the ethernet cable while trying to sort out the wireless connections?? Please

thank you.

Hello,
If you have a .rpm file you can make a double clic on it. If you have a compressed file, uncompress it and see the given instructions in the readme file.

hello Lebarhon,
Its a compressed file downloaded fron the realtec website. In the dowload file, when I double click on it, it decompresses to: 5 folders & 27 files. The folders are: Compat : firmware : rtl8192ce : rtl 8192de : rtl8192se.

I click on firmware and it opens to: folder rtlwifi. When I double click on this it opens to: one text file and 7 .bin files, all of which are drivers. ie rtl8192cfw.bin rtl8192chwU.bin rtl8192cfwU_b.bin rtl1892defw.bin rtl8192defw_12bin rtl8192sefw.bin & "rtl8192sefw.old.bin." (= possibly this one relates to older kernel)

When setting up the wifi card the error given was rtl8192sefw.bin missing, so i think this is the driver I need. It also appears to be indicated by a green cross above it. Double clicking on it opened a box with several "open with"options the only viable one being install & remove software, however there was a pulldown at the top of the box offering :
open with /usr/bin/rpm/drake I choose this one and it opened the MCC software updates etc. but no driver to install. The other option available is Run In terminal Did not do that. There seems to be slider to indicate the installation progression but this did not move. Dont know where to go from here.

thanks for your help.

You could try `modprobe rtl8192se`.

I think you really don't need to download anything from realtec. This is not the Windows world. The "driver" referred to as a "kernel module" in the Linux world and they are installed with "modprobe", not with "rpmdrake". So just give the modprobe a try and see if that fixes the problem. - George

The firmware for that chipset is contained in the package rtlwifi-firmware. It's not needed to download this manually.
Please show the output of
Code: Select all
rpm -qa | grep firmware
and
Code: Select all
lspcidrake -v | grep NET

Also, you mentioned troubles getting your wireless connection to work, did you receive any error messages or what was the actual problem?

So you're actually crossposting from viewtopic.php?f=7&t=5279 ?

Also, when i wrote "summarize" i thought of a short summary in 2 or 3 lines what your problem is,
not a page full of text. Doesn't really help with troubleshooting.

I'm merging the threads together.

Thank you george. REF: your comment about wifi problems. The system message I received about the missing file rtl 9182 also gave the realtec website URL as an option to d/l from there. I tried to find a suitable package via the software centre's search facility as well as the MCC search bar,and RPM distributions, but not knowing the terminology to use made it somewhat difficult.

When this was not successful I eventually found a link to the realtec website in a post on this site in this network section for the same "driver". For these reasons it appeared to be a viable next step.
Also I knew linux did not use the term "drivers" but I did not know the correct terminology and this in itself made it difficult to find the module/ package "
You could try `modprobe rtl8192se`:
How? Where? What actions do i take in order to try this? Thank you.

Thanks for your help doktor. Ref: Cross posting, I was asking for steps to D/L 3rd party software, any 3rd party SW. In this case it just happened to be a wifi. Thats why I did not continue in the thread.
Sorry. I thought my problem was quite clear. "cannot get my wifi cards to connect: having spent 24 hours on & off trying, it was quite difficult to convey the error messages, the various things I had tried and the results in a couple of sentences, especially as I dont know the abbreviations/initials and general Linux language.

This was quoted in my very first post:
RTLwifi Firmware not available File missing /lib/firmware/rtwifi/rt|8192sefw.bin

Perhaps the info given to me today: "
The firmware for that chipset is contained in the package rtlwifi-firmware"
would have been very useful in your response to my first post, especially if it was accompanied by a few instructions on how to obtain that package. That said I really do appreciate your time, help & efforts. thank you.

hello justnewb,
If you are really new to Linux, don't go too far too fast, and never install software out of Mageia repositories.
A driver is a packages like any one.
To install rtlwifi-firmware go in the Mageia Control Center / Software managemant /install & remove software, check all the drop-down lists are set to "All" and type rtlwifi-firmware in the "Find:" field. Select rtlwifi-firmware for your architecture and click on Apply.
About modprob, open a console, type 'su -" enter the password. Behind the #, write
# modprobe rtl8192se
and enter.

Thank you. Did that, all sorted, wirless working and I have access to the internet. Brilliant, thanks.
Much easier with step step intructions.

Used my 1st Pc at work in 1985, (old dos) windows 1998 till now. Be 70 next month so perhaps Im finding it a little more difficult than I anticipated. Dont mind the difficulty but the frustration is sometimes hard to deal with.
Anyway sorry to have been such a pain. hopefully I will stay out of your hair for a little while now.

Thanks for everything. regards margaret

Hello All,

This is to tell that this solution works as well for the RTL8723AE PCIe Wireless Network Adapter.
This adapter is found on Toshiba Satellite notebooks widely distributed to students by the Conseil Général de Midi Pyrénées in France.

Only the rtlwifi-firmware package did not appear in the proposed software list and I had to download it from http://rpmfind.net/linux/rpm2html/search.php?query=rtlwifi-firmware.

I then ran the modprobe rtl8723ae command in a root terminal window and ran the config tool in the hardware details window and entered the connection details.

I did not even have to reboot and I am typing this over my wifi connection!
