Configuring a pptp server on Mageia 2 for remote VPN

Configuring a pptp server on Mageia 2 for remote VPN

Postby azeem_k » Jun 11th, '13, 13:28

Hi everybody,

I would like to configure a PPTP server on my Mageia box. I will be travelling soon to some new and strange places and it will be mighty handy to be able to VPN into my machine at home from my Android phone and my iPad.

Is there a tutorial around somewhere? In my search, I came across poptop for Ubuntu and a handy script (http://www.putdispenserhere.com/pptp-de ... up-script/) but nothing equivalent seems to be available for Mageia. I am running Mageia 2 (x64).

Thanks,
Azeem

Any reason you don't want to use ssh, or why you want to use PPTP?

My Mageia box is in my college campus where I am responsible for administering a couple of machines behind the firewall. The firewall unfortunately is a proprietary box that only supports web SSL VPN (with clients only for Windows and hence does not work with mobile devices).

I would like to tunnel all traffic (email client, web etc.) which is much easier if I can simply enable VPN in the general settings of the Android phone and the iPad.

Thanks,

Well, you might want to use the search function, IIRC there were some threads and also some bugreports for PPTP and related stuff ... :/
As far as i'm aware no solution so far, or at least no success report - maybe people got it to run but never replied back here.

You may want to look at viewtopic.php?f=25&t=1435 and https://bugs.mageia.org/show_bug.cgi?id=2894

Thanks. I will try to find an alternate solution if I cannot get this to run. If I do, I will post the steps here.

Hi everyone,

Just reporting back from my experiments. I tried setting up pptpd but I am not experienced enough to translate scripts and instructions etc. meant for ubuntu onto mageia. Hence, I gave that up and instead decided to setup OpenVPN. After a day of trial and error, I got it working fine. If anyon'e interested, they can checkout a webpage that I created detailing my experience at http://www.azeemkhan.in/2013-06-22.html

Thanks to doktor5000 who replied and all those who had a look at my question but were unable to assist me.
