[SOLVED] HP P1102w does not work.

Postby banjo » Nov 16th, '14, 19:25

I just installed an HP P1102w laserjet. I used a Windows 7 computer to install it. It works fine from Windows.

Wireless static IP address 192.168.1.252.

It will not print using my Mageia 3 computer with HPLIP 3.12.9 installed. The foomatic database says the printer requires 3.10.4 so I should be good to go as far as the hplip drivers.

When I installed the printer, the Mageia Control Center told me that the printer needs a plugin. I said OK to downloading etc. I don't remember the details. There were no errors noted.

I can log into the printer web server and all looks fine. The printer is shown to be idle and ready to print. CUPS management page shows Idle - "ready to print". When I queue a job, I get an error message saying that there was a problem with the print job.

I clicked on the Diagnose button and went through the steps. No solution was found. I captured the debug information, but I am at a loss what to make of it. Here is the output from the error log.

Code: Select all

The log is flagging a PPD problem.

I tried running hp-setup to make sure that the plugin was downloaded properly, but that program wants me to set up the printer again using the USB connection. The printer has already been set up and works fine with the other computer. I don't want to set it up again. I just need the plugins or whatever.

Is the "plugin" the PPD file?

The error log says,

Code: Select all
"D [16/Nov/2014:10:56:47 -0500] [Job 145] Failed to send: org.freedesktop.ColorManager.Failed:device id 'Laserjet' does not exists",
'D [16/Nov/2014:10:56:47 -0500] [Job 145] Failed to get profile filename!',
'D [16/Nov/2014:10:56:47 -0500] [Job 145] no profiles specified in PPD',
'D [16/Nov/2014:10:56:47 -0500] [Job 145] Set job-printer-state-message to "no profiles specified in PPD", current level=INFO',

"Laserjet" is the name I gave it on installation. Is that incorrect? Do I have to leave the name at the default that was presented?

I don't know what to try next. Maybe I will re-install the printer and see what happens.

Thanks in advance.

Update:

I reinstalled the printer on Mageia using the default name "HP LaserJet Professional p1102w". It did not help. The CUPS printer manager shows the printer information as:

"HP LaserJet Professional p1102w,hpcups 3.12.9, requires proprietary plugin"

Does anybody know what the proprietary plugin is and where I can get it? I have searched the web and found nothing so far.

Thanks

Why not simply attach the printer once via USB to finish the setup?

Please show the output as normal user of

The printer is now across the room, and I do not have a USB cable that will reach it. I ran out of time moving stuff around to trouble shoot this problem. I may use hp-setup and hook it up with USB when I get some free time later.

For hp-doctor I get
Code: Select all
[brian@localhost ~]$ hp-doctor
bash: hp-doctor: command not found

Bash cannot find that program as a normal user or as root.

When I go through hp-plugin I get:

Code: Select all
[brian@localhost ~]$ hp-plugin

That is the same utility that got launched when I first installed the printer. The utility asked for root password, asked for agreement with a EULA, then looked like it had installed the plugins OK.

The printer still does not work. I get the same dialog box saying "Print Error" and a stopped job queue.

Thanks for the suggestions. I will keep looking as time permits.

Then please check your installation, this is provided by hplip package:

That's interesting. I am not at the Linux computer right now, but I will check later.

I will also try plugging the printer into the USB and using hp-setup to see what the printer has in it.

Thanks,

Ahh, sorry - just saw that you're using Mageia 3. But the plugin installation doesn't seem to be the problem, as for earlier Mageia 2 and Mageia 3 versions of hplip it just failed.
You can simply try to run hp-plugin as root, if it works then, it was the same bug.
For that you may want to look at viewtopic.php?f=24&t=2592
and https://wiki.mageia.org/en/Mageia_2_Err ... omatically

For Mageia 3 there was also another issue related to plugin upload to printer, see https://bugs.mageia.org/show_bug.cgi?id=10072 where one of the contributors uploaded fixed packages: https://bugs.mageia.org/show_bug.cgi?id=10072#c38
In case that helps, you could also try to use the mga5 hplip packages, where this issue should also be fixed.

Please also show or attach the output of
Code: Select all
ls -al /var/lib/hp/hplip.state
LC_ALL=C hp-plugin -g

I tried some more ideas but I still cannot print to the printer. Here is what I did.

I ran hp-plugin as root. There were no errors noted.

I deleted the printer from the Control Center and re-installed it using hp-setup. Turns out I could do that over the wire by specifying the static IP address of the printer as an argument to hp-setup. According to the program, the printer was installed with no errors.

I ran the two commands you suggested:

Code: Select all
[root@localhost brian]# ls -al /var/lib/hp/hplip.state
-rw-r--r-- 1 root root 50 Nov 17 18:45 /var/lib/hp/hplip.state

I have attached the file from the command

LC_ALL=C hp-plugin -g

I am still getting the same errors when I print.

BTW, I am running an HP 3510 Deskjet on this computer with this version of CUPS and HPLIP with no problems. It prints and scans. That one works fine.

Thanks for looking at this.

Seems you attached the wrong file, the one you attached only shows output of plain hp-plugin.

banjo wrote:BTW, I am running an HP 3510 Deskjet on this computer with this version of CUPS and HPLIP with no problems. It prints and scans. That one works fine.

That confirms that you are able to print in general, which is good.
Although that one doesn't seem to require a plugin, but a pretty recent hplip version:
http://hplipopensource.com/hplip-web/mo ... eries.html

For your P1102w there seems to be two entries, and both entries mention that a plugin is required:
http://hplipopensource.com/hplip-web/mo ... 1102w.html
http://hplipopensource.com/hplip-web/mo ... 1102w.html

You can look that up on http://hplipopensource.com/hplip-web/su ... index.html or http://hplipopensource.com/hplip-web/su ... bined.html

Could you please attach both /var/log/cups/error_log and /var/log/cups/access_log please?
Also try again with hp-doctor, if you installed a later hplip version as described previously. There are also other forum thread which describe how to do that. Just give me a shout if you need more help with that.

FWIW, looking again at the debug log excerpt from your original page, it shows:

'D [16/Nov/2014:10:56:47 -0500] [Job 145] STATE: -marker-supply-low-warning',

Could it be that your Laserjet refuses to print due to low toner amounts?
Can you check to print a test page directly from the printer?

Can be done as explained in http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/docu ... =c02007076

Totally apart from that, you may be able to complete the setup as explained here: https://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?id=153195
Code: Select all
hp-setup -i ipadress

Yes. I saw that. I fixed the low toner problem. It is a new printer, and I did not know to remove a protective tab from the contacts on the cartridge that allow the printer to talk to the cartridge. So the printer had no information about the cartridge, thought it was a foreign cartridge and was throwing a MEMORY ERROR. I got warnings from the printer that a non-HP cartridge would void my warranty. :o

Once I figured out what was going on, removed the tab and all is well. The toner supply shows 100%.

It still won't print. :(

I will look at your next suggestion. Have to run to a meeting now.

Sorry about the messups. I did post the wrong file from hp-plugin output.

I have attached the two log files along with the proper output from LC_ALL=C hp-plugin -g.

I did try to install the printer over the wireless using hp-setup and the IP address. The printer installed, but I still could not print to it. I got the same errors. I have installed the plugin multiple times, and it always says "Success".

You mentioned previously that I could try the HPLIP from mg5. How do I gain access to the mg5 repositories to get that HPLIP? I'm not sure how to cross the version boundaries. Is there a better way to get a later version?

I just saw that Mageia 3 is reaching End of Life this month. I don't upgrade the version often because this is a very busy computer, and any downtime is difficult. I should consider an upgrade to 5 after it is stable.

Thanks for all the help.

I can't see anywhere that the plugin upload to printer was actually successful, even when it says plugin installation successful.
Could you unplug or remove the other two printer, the Deskjet_3510_series and Lexmark Optra E312

For the installation of mga5 packages, I'll search for the thread where similar thing was discussed.

Thanks for the pointer. I built HPLIP once on an old Mandriva distro, and after I got it all built the kernel would not accept the module. Rather than attempt to rebuild the kernel I upgraded the OS.... to Mageia... LOL

I will go take a look at it and see what I can do with it. This will take a few days because I only have access to my Linux on weekends and evenings.

Thanks,
Banjo

OK. That's interesting. I don't remember the details. There was something in the kernel that was not compatible and the driver would not install.

Old history. Not worth worrying about.

I finally got around to attempting the upgrade of HPLIP to the latest version from their web site. I have installed hplip-3.14.10 and it works. I had to use hp-plugin to install the plugin again, but after that I can print. Here is a summary of what I did to install it.

I used the urpmi command given here on the forum to install the dependencies since that seemed to be more relevant to the Mageia distro than the one on the web site. Also, the installation command from the web site implies it is forcing the specified packages, and I did not want to do that.

I did all of these commands as root even though the web site said that "make" should not be run as root. When I ran "make" without root permissions, it failed immediately on permissions issues.

Install the dependencies.
Code: Select all
urpmi avahi cups cups-common cups-devel dbus-devel python-gobject gcc-c++ ghostscript openssl-devel jpeg-devel net-snmp-devel glibc-i18ndata glibc_lsb libtool gphoto2-devel usb1.0-devel make wget python-imaging polkit python-qt4 qt4-qtdbus python-dbus python-devel python python-reportlab saned sane-devel sane-backends xsane sane-frontends

I used the configure command for a 32 bit system from the hplip web site.

Code: Select all
./configure --with-hpppddir=/usr/share/ppd/HP --prefix=/usr --enable-qt4 --disable-libusb01_build --enable-doc-build --disable-cups-ppd-install --disable-foomatic-drv-install --disable-foomatic-ppd-install --disable-hpijs-install --disable-udev_sysfs_rules --disable-policykit --enable-cups-drv-install --enable-hpcups-install --enable-network-build --enable-dbus-build --enable-scan-build --enable-fax-build

make ran without error as long as I had root privilege.

I uninstalled the current version of hplip using the control center.

make install ran without errors.

When installing the plugin there was one strange warning:

Code: Select all
Checking for network connection...
Downloading plug-in from:
warning: mandrake distro is not found in AUTH_TYPES

"mandrake"? That is a strange bit of history cropping up.

The plugin worked anyway.

I have not tried turning the printer off and on again to see if the plugin will stick (another hplip bug that cropped up during this discussion), so I do not know if this setup is subject to that problem or not. I will try that later.

hp-doctor, which was not in my previous version of hplip, is now in /usr/bin/hp-doctor

Thanks to all, especially doktor5000 for all the help with this.

Banjo

UPDATE: I turned the printer completely off, then turned it back on and it works fine. It does not demand the installation of the plugin again. Success.

I spoke too soon. I have removed the [SOLVED] from the title because now there is a new problem.

I cannot manage my printers at all through the MCC. When I open the printer manager, all I get is a popup box saying

Code: Select all
You are about to install the following software packages on
your comuter:

- task-printing-server
- task-printing-hp

Proceed?

The only options are "Install" and "Cancel"

Cancel kicks me out of the control panel.

I do NOT want to re-install the non-functional HPLIP stuff that I just got rid of at great effort. The printers all work fine now. I just cannot get into the printer manager anymore. If I acquiesce to the installation demand, will that destroy the HPLIP that I put there myself?

I appear to be stuck on the horns of a dilemma. If I install the packages so I can manage my printers, I cannot print to them. If I install HPLIP myself, I cannot manage the printers.

Questions:
How do I rid myself of this annoying demand?

.... or alternatively

How do I manage my printers directly without going through the MCC?

Thanks
Banjo

Install the two requested metapackages via urpmi --allow-nodeps --allow-force or via rpm -ihv --nodeps

Either try to run system-config-printer (but IIRC that will also check those two packages, same as from MCC)
or use the cups web frontend directly => http://127.0.0.1:631/

What I want to do is set the new Laserjet to be my default printer. I used the CUPS browser based control to do that, gave it root password, and it said that the Laserjet was the new default. However, the Lexmark still shows up as the default when I try to print anything.

I got the MCC control back by following your suggestions about installing the packages nodeps. Thanks for the tip. Here are the results.

Code: Select all
urpmi --allow-nodeps --allow-force task-printing-server
Package task-printing-server-2011-2.mga3.i586 is already installed
WARNING: --allow-force option is in use. Some strange problems may happen

I checked the Laserjet, and it still works. So I appear to have everything back.

However, the on the MCC page, the Laserjet has an icon with a checkmark on it, and the Lexmark has an icon with a heart on it. I assume that the checkmark means that the Laserjet is now the default printer. I do not know what the heart means. The Lexmark still shows up as the default printer when I print.

What does the heart mean?

Thanks again for your patience.
Banjo

UPDATE: In the MCC I right clicked the Laserjet printer and selected "Set as Default". The heart icon on the Lexmark went away, and now the Laserjet shows up as the default when I print. Looks like it is all working again. I will put this thread back to [SOLVED]
