Hi, about 1 week ago Iinstalled mageia1 on a newly formatted partition & selected kde option. 1st problem was that cups was not installed. After installing cups the printer was recognised, but will not print a test page. The msg is that the page has gone to the printer, and the jobs list shows printed, but no output. I have also tried installing the printer with hp-toolbox, this sends me to a hp site for a binary file, but does not name it and I can not identify the required file.

These problems should not occur on a stand alone box with a clean install

I also tried uninstalling cups. This resulted in deleting many pkgs including drakconfig, libreoffice among many others. The packagers should look at this problem.

Thank god I did not try to upgrade my Mandriva installation which is still fully functional.

All help appreciated.

Barry

My guess would be that the device (printer) URI is incorrect. Try modifying printer in cups and when you get to where you choose the printer, look under "Local Printers:" for your printer to be listed. Choose that (not the current connection).

Code: Select all
Modify MFC7340
Current Connection:                        usb:/dev/usb/lp0
Local Printers:                            Brother/MFC-7340
                                           SCSI Printer
Discovered Network Printers:

Other Network Printers:                    Backend Error Handler
                                           AppSocket/HP JetDirect
                                           Windows Printer via SAMBA
                                           Internet Printing Protocol (http)
                                           Internet Printing Protocol (ipp)
                                           LPD/LPR Host or Printer

Next, choose the current driver on the next screen.

Here is the URI for my Brother Printer...
URI: usb://Brother/MFC-7340?serial=000K9N448473

After the printer is installed in CUPS, choose Modify printer to change it.

EDIT: Your printer has to be connected for you to be able to modify it easily.
