Odd problems with Canon printer [Solved]

Odd problems with Canon printer [Solved]

Postby turboscrew » Aug 3rd, '14, 12:04

Hi. I'm not really a Mageia user yet, but took Mageia for a test spin using live DVD.
I wanted to see if my printer (Canon pixma mp140) works with Mageia, and if I would become a Mageia user.

The funny thing is that the MCC hardware does not have 'printer' section even if it has 'scanner' section.
The printer is not found in 'Unknown/Others' section either.
Adding printer ('Configure printing and scanning') does not detect it (actually no USB-printers section at all)
and in the dmesg there is:

Code: Select all
[38474.972673] usb 1-1.4.4: new high-speed USB device number 6 using ehci-pci

I tried the 'Configure printing and scanning' that first installed some printing SW (had to enable the repos first).
Then it opened the 'add printer' window listing serial port, uri and network printer options.

What's wrong?

Oh, I forgot: the 'Mageia welcome" of the Live DVD says:

This is what cups shows:

Let me guess - printer is attached direcly via USB or not, or maybe via some kind of adapter?
As from the dmesg output you posted, directly after the printer is recognised on USB port, there are some issues back-and-forth with what seems to be some device attached to parallel port.

Also cups itself only seems to recognise only some printer connected to serial port ...

The printer is attached via USB hub. There is a parallel port in the machine, but there is nothing attached to it.
Also no USB/Serial converters around.
Could that "pumping" be caused by several attempts to install the printer?

Hi

What I can say is your Canon Pixma MP140 is supported by Mageia.
If you have installed the Cups package via MCC you should also install " task-printing-canon "
You should then be able to add your printer via MCC.
Please try connecting your printer directly to your computer - no hub, and turned on.
See if that improves things

Thanks, I'll try.
The USB hub hasn't been a problem with Mint (although it has some other problems).

When I first open MCC and select the "set up printer(s)..."
It wants to install:
- system-config-printer
- task-printing-server
- task-printing-hp
I accepted, and re-opened the "set up printer(s)..."
No USB-stuff there (although the printer is seen in dmesg).
Installed task-printing-canon (that asks for reboot - didn't do it - Live DVD).

The dmesg looks similar to last time: printer was found on USB and then
the pumping with some ghost serial printer.

Still no USB printers in add-printer.

I used: usb://Canon/MP140
and manually selected the printer.
Then tried to print a file.
CUPS says (localhost:631):
Processing - "Waiting for printer to become available."
and the printing doesn't start.

It looks like the kernel sees the printer HW, but CUPS doesn't.

There it is.

I went back into MCC and removed the printer. Then tried to add a printer in CUPS:

Available Printers

No printers found.

Now, from MCC/add printer window, I clicked server/settings and got:
CUPS server error
There was an HTTP error: Not found.

Checked "localhost:631" and CUPS main page opened...

Installed Mageia on HD. Now there were no problems setting up the printer.
Haven't tried printing with it yet (people sleeping, I don't want to wake them up).

Hi

you will also have to install the sane package for scanning, but that should be taken care of when you install the scanner through MCC
