[SOLVED] Xerox PE220 laser MFP (thanks Lloyd)

Postby gizmo-au » Feb 22nd, '14, 07:35

I have recently been given a Xerox Work Centre PE220. USB conection.
I use Mageia 3 KDE.

When installing the printer, I can't find a driver for PE220. I have tried PE120 but it doesn't work. It installs OK, but when I print the printer warms up, the printer's LCD display shows "printing" but there is no output.

Xerox website offers a Linux driver for PE220 in the form of a tar.gz file.

I haven't the faintest idea what to do with it.

I have downloaded the file to my downloads file.

what next please?

As in what to do with a *.tar.gz file. They're pretty common in Linux....
First thing to do is decompress it. I'm not sure of the actual command - I just looked it up..:-) If you need more info on that, type "man gzip" in a Konsole window (without the quotation marks)
Type "gunzip <filename>" in a Konsole window. Don't type the quotation marks.
This should leave you with a file with a filename of <filename>.tar (tar is short for TApe aRchiver - leftover from the early days of Unix.)
Type this in a Konsole window (again without quotation marks)

"tar xvf <filename.tar>" Don't type the < or > signs, either.
This is probably going to leave you with a directory name with the same filename as the original file but without the .tar.gz extension.
Try it and let me know what you get.

(sometimes .tar.gz files are source code. If it is, I'll explain the rest of the details.
Good luck and let me know how it goes! Hope I helped you at least a little bit! :-)

Hi Lloyd

thanks for your help.
So far...after the gunzip command I ended up with a file named "pe120_220_install.tar"

After the tar xvf command I have the following:
a folder called "pe120_220_install"

Inside that folder are another folder "Linux", also autorun, autorun.inf and pe220.tar

Inside the folder "Linux" there is Folders for Models, Pictures, rd and x86_64 also icons for autorun.gui, back62.bmp, checkcfg.sh, mfpinstall, mfpinstaller.htm, OEM.ini, set_variables.sh, shhv, ubinstall and vendormenu

so...what do I do now?

thanks

don't worry I figured it out...

in Konsole I entered "cd pe120_220_install"

then su and enter password

Then bash autorun

then the installer started up...

dare I say it, just like a Wind*ws install shield wizard...

thanks a lot Lloyd for your help.

For any other complete newbie (like me) to dealing with this sort of issue, to gunzip the tar.gz file I had to navigate within Konsole to the folder that contains the file I'm trying to work on. Im this case I did that by entering "cd downloads" which put me in the downloads folder.
Then when I had done the "tar xvl" command to create the pe120_220_install file, I entered "cd pe120_220_install" to enter that file.
Then had to become super user to get root permissions by entering the command "su" which then asked me for my root password.
(i did that because, having read a Brother printer installation instructions, I guessed that to autorun the installer requires root permission...)
Then I could enter "bash autorun" which is the command to run the autorun file.

Hope this makes things a little clearer to other newbs.
