Try installing "task-printing-canon". I see a MG2100 driver, give that a try.

Mageia Control Center > Set up the printer(s), the print job queues,... > Add > {you need to find the printer here, then choose Forward to select the driver}.

I set up a network printer, so I used the IP address for my printer 192.168.0.5 in the Host box of LPD/LPR Host or Printer and chose Probe, then Forward. I imagine a USB connected printer should just show up in the list.

It is showing my printer, but does not print a document I made.

I don't know if you are printing over the network or via USB.

For network printing, try a URI such as the following: lpd://192.168.0.5/LPT1 {change the 192.168.0.5 to your printer's IP address}. If you still have trouble, try turning off the Firewall (choose Everything) and see if you can print.

MCC > Security > Set up Firewall (something like that).

For USB printing, you need a USB URI. AFAIK, that should be discovered automatically.

I thought than Unix and Linux were older than Windows ?

I am mytified by the amount of hoops to go thru to enable a hardware device. (As compared to Windows)

Setting up my Brother printer was very easy. The Canon printer a little more work.

Whether Unix and Linux are older than Windows isn't really relevant. AFAIK, the printer manufacturers sell more printers to Windows users than Unix/Linux users. The printer manufacturers mainly work to make sure their printers are easy to install in Windows. Microsoft also has a lot of money and programmers; to spend on solving issues.

If a goal of Mageia is to attract new users, it is relevant.

I understand that M.S. has a load of big bucks and a boatload of programmers.

Perusing some posts in microsoft.public.windowsxp.general and other groups indicates a large discontent with the M.S. operating system.

Many are looking for alternatives.

Please open a separate thread for that. As a general hint and golden rule: Please only one problem per thread, and please don't "hijack" threads ;)
