[SOLVED] Sick HPlip installer

[SOLVED] Sick HPlip installer

]I hate to be here at this moment, and have to do this! I wish that things would go right the first time.

I installed for Mageia KDE 64 bit, HPlip for my HP 8600 PRO eprint printer. The installation was taken from the repositories. Tried to install the printer, and I got HPlip to find the network printer by looking up it's address. I proceeded to install it. I didn't get too far. The 64 bit ppd file was missing! Having a lot of problems trying to find a suitable, and installable PPD file (only). So now, I can't use my network printer from lack of a very necessary file.

My former version of Mangeia was working fine, 'till I made a bad booboo! That booboo wiped out clean, the entire /usr directory. I had no choice but to start from scratch again. The older version was working like a top. I had no problem installing the printer. And it went through all the necessary dist-upgrades without a hitch. However, this version that I had to install using a downloaded DVD installation version, seems like they forgot to include the PPD files for the HP printer.

So now, how and where do I obtain an installable 64-bit PPD file that will rescue the problem? Or is it going to be necessary for me to download a tarball file from an external (SourceForge) source, to get the results? Getting desperate!

Cheers!

Your comments and suggestions are very welcome!

There are no 64bit PPD files.
Do you have /usr/share/ppd/HP/hp-officejet_pro_8100.ppd.gz ?

Also please show the output of
Code: Select all
rpm -qa | grep hplip

Thanks for the information. This morning, I succeeded to download the SourceForge version of HPLIP. I installed it. It wasn;t easy, since Mageia was not in the authorized list. I had to pick a distro version which I thought the installation would do the least amount of damge,

It turned out that both installations ended up in the the /Download folder. I ran the version that I earlier downloaded from the repositories, again. This time, it worked! It seems that the SourceForge's version, was one year older than the one from the Mageia repository, and was intact. The younger version from the repository, found and picked up the /ppd file from the SourceForge's older version, and ran with it.

To the best that I can see, in the Mangeia;s repository's version, the ppd file was missing. I lucked out, and with the 2 HPLIP programs from two different sources, the whole thing fell in together to get a productive printer back to work again. I had to do it this way, because the SourceForge version kept on shutting down, due to some missing program which it couldn't find. I actually had that "missing" program installed, but the SourceForge's version somehow coudn't find it. So.each of the 2 programs had a diffeciency. And by combining them together, the puzzle fell into place. They complemented each other.

Thank you for your diligence! I worked many hours on this problem, until I finally succeeded!

Cheers!

The Mageia version contains all PPDs which come with hplip. See e.g.:

Code: Select all
[doktor5000@Mageia3 ~]$ urpmq -l hplip-hpijs-ppds | grep ppd | grep 8600
/usr/share/ppd/HP/hp-officejet_pro_8600.ppd.gz
/usr/share/ppd/HP/hp-officejet_pro_k8600.ppd.gz

Which PPD are you using currently?

The prior version of the current HPLIP. The current version just seemed as if it just couldn't find the required PPD, when it was trying to install and setup the printer. When I clicked on the right side of the GUI, instead of a list of ppd's, it was just a blank screen. But when I brought the older version into the picture, everything just fell into place. Who am I to complain? I got the results that I needed. If you ask me why this happened. Sorry, I don't have the answer, and so very happy that this trial and tribulation is over with.

Cheers!
