Installed Brother HL2270DW Printer

Installed Brother HL2270DW Printer

Used the drivers (rpm's) downloaded from Brother's website. Installed the LPR and CUPSWRAPPER drivers as per Brother's instructions.

Only problem I ran into is that the discovered URI for the network printer does not work. It seems others have had the same problem.

What worked is changing the discovered URI from lpd://BRW002258191E50/BINARY_P1 to lpd://192.168.0.9/BINARY_P1 by modifying the printer in CUPS. [Of course the actual IP address that replaces "BRW002258191E50" or something similar, will depend upon your installation.]

I posted at the end of that thread awhile back. Yeah, that URI works in Arch XFCE and Fedora 17 Gnome, but not in Mageia 2 KDE.

Hi David,
we never had used this Printers, so i cant say whats up/reason with M, but when they work on the other Distros, they work for sure as well on Mageia and Mandriva, as usually, its the trick how to get them working.
I cant imagine that they dont work on M

I had the same problem with my Brother printer both when I installed it on Arch x64 and Gentoo x64. And for that matter in Mageia as well.
In all cases I had to use the IP address instead of the discovered name. It's not a big deal for me. But I think a new Linux user could be irritated by it.

The first time I made the installation of my driver I had to do some extra things to get it working. So I made myself a set of instructions not unlike the ones listed in this thread.
If anyone should be interrested they can be found on my homepage.
Btw. My printer is the DCP-J925DW inkjet printer.

If you run into issues, look at the following thread. It is for Mageia 2, but would likely work in Mageia 3.

I just found an easy way to install my Brother printer under Mageia 3:

Step 1: Download the drivers (rpm's) downloaded from Brother's website. Install the LPR and CUPSWRAPPER drivers as per Brother's instructions.

http://welcome.solutions.brother.com/bs ... d_prn.html

Step 2: Go to the Mageia Control Centre, to "Hardware", then printers. Delete the (mis-)installed Brother printer. Then click "Add" new printer. Then wait for 10 seconds. If you have a USB-printer, it should automatically show after 10 seconds. Click Click Click through the rest of the installation.
Done.

For me, turned out to be a lot easier then trying to get the misconfigured printer getting to work.

In Mageia 3 I just installed my Brother HL-2270DW printer from MCC using the Foomatic/hpijs-pcl5e driver. Piece of cake.

I also managed to get my printer(a Brother 2170W, in my case) installed by changing the printer name (between the lpd:// and the next /) with it's IP address. What I'm concerned with is, will my printer stop working next time my router gets power cycled?

How is the IP adress assigned to the printer in your router? Also, you could simply power-cycle your router to find out ;)

I don't know. How do d-link routers usually do it?

As you don't mention which Router model, my magical crystal ball says probably via DHCP.
Did you try to power-cycle the router to check what happens?

Just to confirm, and with some details i give the state of this day:
I just bought a used Brother HL-2270DW to have as spare printer.
It is quick and print both sides. Low weight for being a laser, i can bring in in my service car.

Super easy to set up in Mageia 8:

Printer setup
Connected the printer by wire to my ethernet LAN router.
In the router interface I see which IP the new device have.
Surfed there using Firefox
Default login admin - per tip when you try to enter :)
Changed the IP as i like it to be

Mageia setup
MCC > Hardware > Printer > Add
Select the method to set URI, use the IP you set in printer
Choose from database: Brother, HL-2170W -> Foomatic/hpijs-pcl5e

Test print OK
Double side print from Firefox OK

The quickest printer setup I ever made :)
Mandriva since 2006, Mageia 2011 at home & work. Thinkpad T40, T43, T400, T510, Dell M4400, M6300, Acer Aspire 7. Workstation using LVM, LUKS, VirtualBox, BOINC
