I just tried adding my Brother AIO printer, needed ink, is why I just tried it. I downloaded the cups and lpr drivers from Brother's website and installed them from the gui screen. Everything seems to be working fine, test page prints good. But when I try to print from an application, such as gedit or Abiword, nothing comes out. Looking the LCD on the printer show message, 'receiving data' but flash by very fast.

I tried uninstalling and reinstall the drivers thru cli but getting conflicting information. Below is what I get:

I'm not sure what to do at this point. While using Mandrdiva 2010.2, everythings prints without issues. Though I don't have Mdv installed on this machine to try.

Any ideas/suggestions?

I still didn't get this working with the Gnome 64bit version of Mageia so now that I have KDE 32bit version installed, I'll see if the printer will work using it.

There's a suggestion there that installing a2ps may help.

Hmmm, interesting...so printing from Firefox does print but when I try to print from Kwrite, nothing. Also while running minimum Gnome, I wasn't able to print from Gedit or Abiword, I never did try printing from FF. When I boot into Gnome I'll see if FF prints.

I do have printing from KDE version using Firefox but will have to try printing from Gnome version later.

Well after reading the links in the other posts, I decided to install a2ps, which was missing, and now I can print from other programs besides FF. Thanks to those who posted the links.

It would seem, during task-print installation or whatever it's called, it may have left out a2ps as a dependency. I assume it is needed for my Brother AIO.

As a result of Bug 1212 (which was mine) a2ps has been moved from the printing-server packages that aren't always installed, to the task-printing group, which is. That should ensure that there are no problems in future.

@laidlaws I think that your bug was 1172. Bug 1212 should probably be closed as a dup of 1172.

How is your printer configured? I got something similar with the USB connection for my MFC-490CW, but the connection:
"dnssd://Brother%20MFC-490CW._printer._tcp.local/" prints just fine.

Mine is setup as usb://Brother/MFC-5440CN?serial=BROM5F412304

I just did a reinstall from the Gnome livecd and again, got the printer working by making sure the a2ps is installed manually.

Might want to switch this to unsolved. I have the same same printer, same issue, followed the same steps and am still lost. I will start a new thread, but it seems like the fixes might be independent from one another.

Did you make sure the a2ps is installed manually? That is how I had to get it working.
