[SOLVED] Canoscan LIDE 30

PostPosted: Aug 14th, '21, 00:51

I just failed to install the scanner Canoscan LIDE 30 under Mageia 7. The scanner hardware detection of the MCC does not show the scanner.
However I had it already installed successfully on another computer.

Workaround.

I have attached the file which must be put under "/home/franz/.sane/xsane/Canon:CanoScanN1240U_LiDE30.drc"

The size of the scan has always been much to small.

Why did you mark this as solved, what was the solution ?

Well, it is a workaround.
There should be a better solution when the scanner is installed and configured automatically be the Mageia Control Center.
The scanner has been working directly after the plugin at the usb part, but with the wrong resolution.

Your initial description is slightly confusing. For one, you mentioned that scannerdrake in MCC doesn't detect your scanner.
Did you do anything besides MCC to actually setup the scanner? Also, please post the output as root of
Code: Select all
sane-find-scanner -v
scanimage -L
lspcidrake -v

Also, the file that you mentioned, ~/.sane/xsane/Canon:CanoScanN1240U_LiDE30.drc - did you simply copy that from another box,
and does that fix the issue with the wrong size of the scan or the wrong resolution ? And what about other scan applications, like e.g. simple-scan or similar?
Also please check if the plustek backend is enabled in /etc/sane.d/dll.conf on your box - it should be by default.

I did not use MCC to search for the scanner, but only to install the scanner rpm.
But when I tried to detect the scanner at a later moment, then it failed to show me a scanner.
It shows a dialog "Setup scanner". "Is not in the scanner database, configure it manually?".

I press "No".
The following scanners

- Noname HP HD Camera: HP HD Camera virtual device
- Canon CanoScan N1240U/LiDE30 flatbed scanner

are available on your system.

I have executed the 3 commands. See the attached file.

I just copied the file "...LiDE30.drc" from another notebook with the same Mageia 7 Linux where I had already used the same scanner successfully.
Yes, this fixed the issue to be able to scan a page in the size of A4 format. The resolution can be changed in the scan dialog box without any problem.

/etc/sane.d/dll.conf has these entries among others:

Code: Select all
plustek
#plustek_pp

Simple-scan works very good without any modifications in the dialog.
See the PDF file.

So if the scanner is usable without running MCC, and if the size can be configured in xsane, and simple-scan works without changes, I don't get the issue.

This is partly wrong. The size in xsane is hardcoded in the configuration file which I had to copy and overwrite. Before it has been much too small and not A4 size without this workaround.
I see not possibility to configure the size with xsane.
I think that on the other computer MCC has offered something to get the full size which the scanner supports.

AFAICT the only thing that scannerdrake does is sane configuration to enable a backend if that is disabled and also it takes care about scanner access rights to allow regular users to scan.
It doesn't do anything about xsane application-level configuration.

And xsane does allow to select the scan size in the preview dialog, see e.g. http://www.fifi.org/doc/xsane/html/sane ... AUTOSELECT and you can also choose various preset sizes: http://www.fifi.org/doc/xsane/html/sane ... RESET_AREA

I cannot find any preview dialog for Canoscan.
Should this be there in xsane version 0.999?

See this image.

I have started the XSane-Scanning again.
Now the preview window has show up also.
However the size option is inactive.
I get an error dialog when I want to aquire the preview. :o

The preview window only appears if the scanner is not plugged in when I start Canoscan.
This is weird. And if I plug the scanner in after the start of Canoscan, then the error dialog appears, that it fails to start the scanner.

Somehow the A4 paper size is not available any more. I can only scan a 20x20 cm square.
The preferences setup menu still shows the A4 size as 20.320 mm width and 29,460 mm height for Copy. However the scan dialog now only has 20,32 cm x 20,32 cm available.

I have used the Mageia Control Center scanner detection and chose the LIDE 35 manually.

The following scanners

- Noname HP HD Camera: HP HD Camera virtual device
- Canon CanoScan N1240U/LiDE30 flatbed scanner

are available on your system.

I do not know why the former setup has been overwritten and how I can get the 20 x 29 cm A4 format back.

The other "scanner" is probably a connected webcam. See the last line at https://wiki.archlinux.org/title/SANE#Slow_startup to blacklist the video 4 linux modules for saned.

Yes, the other media reader is the HD cam on the notebook.

Here is the solution:

Open the Menu "Window" -> "Show Preview".

If you click on this checkbox, then another window will open. There you see the current page format in the dashed lines. You can resize the rectangle by the mouse movements and clicks. Or you click on the select box "full size" or choose "A4" from there.
This configuration will automatically be stored for the next time at $HOME/.sane/xsane/Canon:CanoScanN1240U_LiDE30.drc .
Make a backup copy of this file to save your chosen format. You can reload it later at "Preferences" -> "Load device settings".

That's it. Now the full page in the scanner will be read in as a PDF file or in another format.

That is also described under the link I mentioned previously regarding the preview window, no? http://www.fifi.org/doc/xsane/html/sane ... AUTOSELECT

Before I could not find the preview or I mixed it up with the View select.

It is described here:

Left mouse button:
Select scan area: Press (&hold) left mouse button to define one edge, move the mouse so that the area you want to scan is in the frame and release the button.

Edit scan area: Move the pointer over an edge or side of the existing selection, the mouse pointer changes. Now press (&hold) the left mouse button, you can move the dragged edge/side of the scanarea, then release the left mouse button.
Right and middle mouse button:
If you press (&hold) the right or the middle mouse button in the selection frame you can move the selection frame without resizing it.
