This is a comment and not a problem. The printer indicated low black ink level. Normally I change the cartridge at this point. I decided not to. The next warning was when the printer stopped printing and said change the cartridge now, I hit OK but did not change the cartridge. It is still printing in black. I have printed around 20 pages since the initial warning. Obviously the warning is incorrect and I have wasted ink over the years.

if this could be real,then it would really great to have one.. truth is this low level warning messages causes a lot of unused ink..

Hi,
I have a HP Photosmart 3210 and color cartridges weight drop of 2 grammes between full (new) and empty (the printer refuse to go on), whereas HP says the ink capacity is 4 ml that is 4 grammes. I used a letter scales.
I also noticed that after the print of about 10 or 20 pages, the indicated level can drop for a color that is not used at all in these pages!
This printer refuse to go on if a color cartridge is empty, even for a color that is not used.
So I think these indicators are pure marketing and are talking garbage, it is only a toggle switch full/empty.
Now, manufacturers have added an expiry date, so even full, you have to change the cartridge.

Some printers also mix up black from all the other colors, and strange things like that.

Yes, did you notice, the cheaper is the printer, the more expensive are the cartridges and vice versa.

you hit the pot! ongoing cost should always be calculated upon buying a printer. Most companies are selling printing devices with a too good to be true deal to get more profits in the long term.

I bought a new in the box LaserJet 1000 HP printer for $50 at a SAMS Club about four years ago. The replacement cartridge was $65 to renew. It works well with Linux and it is a very nice and crisp printing printer but the refills are murder...

just a comment, but on topic,

some low life retailers, one that comes to mind , related to a plannet, sell printers with startup cartridges.

that is a cartridge with only enough ink to print 3 pages.

this well know retailer marks the printers at a lower price than there competitors, but the reality is

that you HAVE to buy cartridges imeadiatly to use the printer , as by the time the initial head cleaning and pumping is done, theres little ink left for anything else.

this will frequently double the initial purchase price, if you buy the cartridges from the same retailer.

even if you get compatible cartridges from people like http://www.nd-ink.co.uk you will still be adding to what it would cost to get these printers with full cartridges supplied in the box.

Maybe at a slightly higher price.

Actually the whole majority of inkjet and laser printers initial cartridges are only starter ones, and never full capacity ones like the ones you need to buy after the initial ones are depleted. This is a well-known problem ...
