Epson scanner won't work on Mageia 7.1

Postby HoaniP » Nov 17th, '19, 04:53

I have an Epson L485 multi function printer/scanner.After some help from the forum and my son last year, I got it going with Mageia 6, on my HP all-in-one computer.

Recently, I upgraded to Mageia 7.1, and I cannot get the scanner going. The printer is fine.

None of the fixes from last year works, so here Iam again, asking for your help.

My last request can be found here: viewtopic.php?f=24&t=12480&p=74052&hilit=epson+scanner#p74052

This is what I've done so far:
1. I have attempted to configure the scanner, using Control Centre (MCC), but MCC doesn't show it as a scanner.
2. I have run lsusb, with the following result:

Code: Select all
    lsusb
Bus 001 Device 006: ID 0bda:b00a Realtek Semiconductor Corp.
Bus 001 Device 005: ID 04b8:111e Seiko Epson Corp.
Bus 001 Device 004: ID 04ca:00a9 Lite-On Technology Corp.
Bus 001 Device 003: ID 222a:0134

Bus 001 Device 001: ID 1d6b:0002 Linux Foundation 2.0 root hub
Bus 003 Device 002: ID 0bda:0401 Realtek Semiconductor Corp. USB3.0 Hub
Bus 003 Device 001: ID 1d6b:0003 Linux Foundation 3.0 root hub
Bus 002 Device 003: ID 0408:5230 Quanta Computer, Inc. HP 2.0MP High Definition Webcam
Bus 002 Device 005: ID 1949:0004 Lab126, Inc. Amazon Kindle 3/4/Paperwhite
Bus 002 Device 002: ID 0bda:5401 Realtek Semiconductor Corp. RTL 8153 USB 3.0 hub with gigabit ethernet
Bus 002 Device 001: ID 1d6b:0002 Linux Foundation 2.0 root hub
[root@localhost

3. I have installed, then uninstalled the SANE packages. This made no difference.

4. As root, I have run scanimage -L
sane-find-scanner -v with the following result:
Code: Select all
[root@localhost papa]# scanimage -L
device `v4l:/dev/video0' is a Noname HP 2.0MP High Definition Webcam virtual device
[root@localhost papa]# sane-find-scanner -v
This is sane-find-scanner from sane-backends 1.0.27

  # sane-find-scanner will now attempt to detect your scanner. If the
  # result is different from what you expected, first make sure your
  # scanner is powered up and properly connected to your computer.

I notice that this talks about sane-find-scanner. Should I reinstall SANE?

5. I went to Epson Download Centre, hoping to install the drivers from there, as I did last year, but Epson have changed things. It shows a drives here: http://download.ebz.epson.net/dsc/searc ... archModule , with a download link. I clicked tha, then accepted the software licence agreement, and was shown three download options: Package Download Page, Manual, Source File Download Page.

The Package Download Page ( http://support.epson.net/linux/en/imagescanv3.php ) shows drivers for ARM, Ubuntu, Linux Mint, Debian, Fedora, openSUSE, and CentOS, but not Mageia.

I downloaded the CentOS 8 64bit package, thinking that it and Mageia use RPM. When I tried to install the imagescan-3.61.0-1epson4centos8.x86_64.rpm package I received a response saying that it could not be installed due to unsatisfied GraphicsMagic. I did have the option to install it anyway, but I've chosen not to until I get advice.

6. I thought of using the same drivers I used last year, but I lost those when I installed Mageia 7.1.

I have read the post from JJF in September/October ( viewtopic.php?f=24&t=13073&p=76753&hilit=epson+scanner#p76753 ) but it did not help.

Thank you.

You may want to have a look at https://wiki.mageia.org/en/Epson_scanners
Also, your scanner should be supported by one of the newer sane backends: http://www.sane-project.org/lists/sane- ... #S-UTSUSHI and https://gitlab.com/utsushi/utsushi

Thank you, doktor5000, for your suggestions.

I've studied the links, as well as a lot of other information, and I'm completely out of my depth.

It seems that the SANE version for Mageia 7.1 is 0.999, but when I install it, the scanner (Epson L485 = 0x04b8 : 0x111e) is not found by Mageia Control Centre (it shows only the webcam).

sane-find-scanner shows "found USB scanner (vendor=0x04b8,product=0x111e) at libusb:001:005";

The link http://www.sane-project.org/lists/sane- ... #S-UTSUSHI shows: PID 111E USB 0x04b8/0x111e Good , which I assume is my scanner. The SANE version number appears to be 1.0.28, or thereabouts.

Beyond that, I am lost. I don't know how to update SANE. I've read the README files, and it's all a long way beyond what I can do.

I still have a non-functioning scanner.

I hope someone can help me.

Thank you.

0.999 is the version of xsane, which is a graphical frontend to sane. sane itself is at 1.0.28.

Could you show the full output as root of
Code: Select all
sane-find-scanner
scanimage -L

If sane-find-scanner shows your scanner, that it's usually only a permission problem to make it work for the regular user.

Well, according to the link your scanner should be supported by the utsushi backend. But I don't see either a utsushi.conf below /etc/sane.d/ nor an entry for that backend in /etc/sane.d/dll.conf.
Seems we don't ship that backend, but this also could be an external one only provided by the Epson drivers.

Maybe you really installed the Epson drivers last time and that's why it worked? https://download.ebz.epson.net/dsc/sear ... ch/?OSC=LX

I did use the Epson drivers last time, but the new Epson drivers here: http://support.epson.net/linux/en/imagescanv3.php are different.

Last year, the drivers were for .rpm or .deb. This year, they are for different distros, but not including Mageia.

The only .rpm distros are Fedora, openSUSE, and CentOS. I have tried these, but with no luck. I have also found the drivers from last year, but they did not work. Last year, with Mageia 6, my son got it working by adding me to the group LP. He spent a couple of hours on it, so he probably did other things too. He can't remember what else he did, and he is in another country now. Who knows when he will be back. His suggestion is to use Windows! Heinous child.

Thank you for your guidance about Code, in your last post. I'll remember that for next time.

I've tried so many different ideas since installing Mageia 7, that I'm wondering if I should do a complete reinstall and start again.

Do you have any suggestions, please?

All the best for the New Year.
