[SOLVED] Problem : scanner brother DSmobile 620

Postby jibz » Jan 29th, '17, 14:09

hi every body !

I was on debian for few month, waiting on mga6, but I crashed it down yesterday... So I install the mga6 in development.
But, I need to scan a paper, the DS 620 was installed without any trouble on deb, but with mga6, I meet some difficulties...
On the Brother web page, I download the drivers in the rpm format, install it, but the scanner is not yet recognised like a scanner, but a usb-storage.
dmesg :
Code: Select all
[  883.686378] usb 1-2: new high-speed USB device number 6 using xhci_hcd
[  883.855218] usb 1-2: New USB device found, idVendor=04f9, idProduct=60e0
[  883.855222] usb 1-2: New USB device strings: Mfr=1, Product=2, SerialNumber=3
[  883.855223] usb 1-2: Product: DS-620
[  883.855224] usb 1-2: Manufacturer: Brother
[  883.855225] usb 1-2: SerialNumber: E72183B6U113557
[  883.855718] usb-storage 1-2:1.0: USB Mass Storage device detected
[  883.855801] scsi host6: usb-storage 1-2:1.0

I found on this page a lot of rules, but no one for mga ( http://support.brother.com/g/s/id/linux/en/instruction_scn1c.html?c=us&lang=en&prod=ds620_all&redirect=on#f17 )
I tried few thing on /lib/udev/rules.d/60-libsane.rules, but nothing change...

Does anyone have any idea ? :|

Well, the udev rule to be added is only for access to the scanner as regular user, if the scanner is set up already then you should be able to see the scanner as root via sane-fine-scanner or scanimage -L
For access as regular user, the rule is the same for all current distros, see http://support.brother.com/g/s/id/linux ... t=on#m2010

Also, which package did you install yet, libsane-dsseries ? What does your sane.conf look like currently for your model?
It would also help if you could add the complete output of
Code: Select all
lspcidrake -v
Cauldron is not for the faint of heart!

As far as I remember, I install nothing else than libsane-dsseries.

As root, sane-fine-scanner result :
Code: Select all
  # sane-find-scanner will now attempt to detect your scanner. If the
  # result is different from what you expected, first make sure your
  # scanner is powered up and properly connected to your computer.

  # No SCSI scanners found. If you expected something different, make sure that
  # you have loaded a kernel SCSI driver for your SCSI adapter.
  # Also you need support for SCSI Generic (sg) in your operating system.
  # If using Linux, try "modprobe sg".

  # No USB scanners found. If you expected something different, make sure that
  # you have loaded a kernel driver for your USB host controller and have setup
  # the USB system correctly. See man sane-usb for details.

  # Not checking for parallel port scanners.

  # Most Scanners connected to the parallel port or other proprietary ports
  # can't be detected by this program.

and scanimage -L (also as root)
Code: Select all
device `v4l:/dev/video0' is a Noname USB2.0 HD UVC WebCam virtual device

lspcidrake -v result :
Code: Select all

It could be that something like usb_modeswitch is interfering, do you have that installed, if so you could try to remove it and replug the scanner, same way with journalctl -af as suggested in the other thread and post the output here.

Without usb_modeswitch wouldn't it always be seen as mass storage?

That depends what the standard mode is or if there are multiple switches, but there have been several occurences where people needed to remove usb_modeswitch to get their devices working the way they needed it.
In general you're right, the normal unswitched mode should be mass storage - should.

Hello !
I have no good news... An update crashed my wifi connection, I already reinstalled Mga, the wifi was here again, Mga make an update, and I don't have the Wifi again...
So the installation is ultra fresh.
I installed the driver by brother (just in case...) and sane.
I tried, but no change.
I remove usb_modeswitch, I didn't reboot, like you said just. I start the journalctl -af, unplug and replug the scanner and I get :

No changed, I still can't see it like a scanner with the app simple scan.
I reinstall usb_modeswitch, because it uninstalled :
    comgt
    modemmanager
    networkmanager
    networkmanager-libreswan
    plasma-applet-nm
    usb_modeswitch-data
(The funiest, in order to install this app again, it need more dependencies xD )

I wont open a new topic for the wifi before closing this one, you already have to much job Doktor5000 ;)
After this one, I will.

Re: Problem : scanner brother DSmobile 620

Well somehow the scanner is seen as usb mass storage, for whatever reason. From another thread it might be that you need to load the "sg" kernel module for it to be recognised, see https://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php ... 3#p1610563
So can you try to unplug the scanner, as root
Code: Select all
modprobe sg

and then replug it? If that doesn't work, we may need to take a look at the udev rule processing when you plug it, to see whether the udev rule supplied by brother is effective and gets processed.

IIIIITTT WOOOOOORRRRRKKKKKSSSS !!!!!!!

Thank you very much !
Topic solved !

Can you tell me more about this module ? What is it ? What is it made for ? Why isn't it start by default ?
Should I re-tape this command at the next boot (any time I want to use the scanner) ?

Re: [SOLVED] Problem : scanner brother DSmobile 620

Glad that worked, you may want to provide feedback to Brother support to see whether they could add a hint about that on their linux section http://support.brother.com/g/s/id/linux/en/index.html

You can take a look for yourself via
Code: Select all
modinfo sg

Only thing I can tell it seems to be a generic SCSI driver, see e.g. http://tldp.org/HOWTO/SCSI-2.4-HOWTO/sg.html

I have still so much to learn !
I even don't know exactly what SCSI is. :D I will look it, and make the feedback.
See you on the next topic ! ;)
