Can't detect scanner on the HP Office Jet 3833. Printer detected as 3830 series and works no problem. Same problem with USB or wireless.

but not 33, but im guessing this is probably covered.

they only list mandriva, 2011, but given that the same person maintained hplip under mandriva as does in mageia, its prob the same.

ive done this for another hp printer,

again this used hplip, and printing and scanning worked ok, under mga3, and 5
heres an article on the ubuntu pages, re scanning and hplip.

Using your scanner

Turn on your scanner and place a document or photo face down on the scanner.

Go to Applications --> Graphics --> XSane Image Scanner or SimpleScan. Adjust some settings if required.

Press Scan. Alternatively you can also press the "Scan" button on the scanner to open the scanning dialog.

you said cant detect, but little else about how you tried, so ive had to guess a few things.

assuming you went into mcc and tried to add a scanner.

did you try to use hplip to find it, rather than add a printer, use device discovery, and under advanced set it to all in one mfp device

How did you try to detect the scanner, and did you set it up initially - using MCC/scannerdrake or using hp-setup ?

Seems somehow the scanner can be seen, even if it may not be supported by the hplip version you're using.

Seems you need either a new version of hplip (IIRC there are some newer hplip-3.15.11-1.mga5 packages in core/backports) or you could try to remove the printer in MCC and then configure it by using

Removed printer with MCC and tried to setup with hplip but still no luck. Enabled core/backports but dont see newer hplip in MCC.

Ok below you see the output. Tried to go back to 3.14.6 version but after installing hp-setup would not run. So installed backport 3.15.11 and hp-setup is ok. For some unknown reason to me, when hp-setup didn't seem to be working i installed through MCC again and the scanner was recognized and functioned properly with simple scan. This morning after restart of computer simple scan doesn't see it although it is still listed in MCC. For the output below I removed printer from MCC, scanner is somehow still listed however. Now it doesn't even seem to find a printer queue anymore. Are you sure you configured it via hp-setup beforehand and finished that?

Apart from that, you could still try to remove the hplip packages, and then install it manually as described e.g. at http://hplipopensource.com/hplip-web/in ... other.html from step 3. onwards.
If that doesn't work, you should probably report this issue upstream and verify what the root cause is. You can do this by asking a question or reporting it as a bug, links are here: http://hplipopensource.com/hplip-web/support.html

Ok will try that later today. hp-setup never did detect printer, "no installed HP devices found" message . MCC installed printer but not scanner function.

If xsane, run as root, finds the scanner and functions, then it is possible that hplip has set inappropriate permissions for the device.

There are a number of open bug reports about similar problems with hp multi-function devices. Do a simple search in bugzilla for hplip.

Some of those bug reports suggest possible corrective action that could be taken that might make the scanner available. One of those may work in this case.

Ran lsusb and found printer on bus 001 device 002. One of the permissions listed as "named user" lp group. In MCC added lp group to my account. All ok with scanner now as regular user. Thanks to all for interest and help.
