Canon printer/scanner not working.

Canon printer/scanner not working.

Postby madsaint » Mar 15th, '16, 16:51

Hi All,
I recently installed Mageia5 with KDE4 desktop. Through MCC I configured my Canon MP270 printer/scanner with Cups, Sane and Xsane. It prompted to load non Canon Support programs.
The problem now is the test print prompts "ẅaiting for available printer".Itś been hours, no test print.
How do I get it to work?

Any suggestions anyone?

I have a MP280 which works fine.
In saying that there were 3 or 4 cups drivers available and I had to select each one until the printer would print correctly.

Hi benmc,

Long time no hear.

M5 prompted additional cups drivers during setup. It still couldn't work. However during a software update yesterday, I noticed updates and loading of all the drivers of the various printer brands. Almost all of them have now been loaded.

To query your reply, are the multiple drivers you refer to only Canon's or the other brands? If so, could you tell me which they are as our printer models are in the same series and close model types. I'm assuming that stands to reason. Set me right, if you would please.

Hi madsaint,

when configuring the printer setup, for me, the first page gives the url of the printer, next page has highlighted "canon", next page scroll to and find model "mp280", then the next page has 3 or 4 cups drivers available. I had to choose each one of these drivers at a time and check a test page.
as you say, the test page can not print for hours if the incorrect driver is selected.
I am not sure if the MP270 presents a selection of cups drivers for it.
You can also choose a different driver by right clicking the MP270 printer icon in the "add printer box".
choose "properties" and then "settings" then "make and model" => "change" and it will offer the "choose driver" with canon (recommended) window, then the next page gives another "chose driver", this time with the model on the left pane and the driver to choose on the right. there should be a number of drivers to choose for your MP270.

choices for your printer are:

MP270 - 2 drivers
MP270-series - 2 drivers

MULTIPASS MP270 - 2 drivers

Pixma MP270 - 2 drivers

Pixus MP270 - 4 drivers
so a few options for you.

this one: Canon PIXMA MP280 - CUPS+Gutenprint v5.2.10 Simplified works for my MP280

Hi benmc,

Great help, printer works. The mp270 uses a different driver than Gutenprint, which made me wait for ages for a test print. I'm soo relieved that that's over. However, in my earlier attempts to get the printer running MCC loaded CUPS utilities of almost every brand of printer. Can I remove them without causing any conflicts with my now working printer?

Any tips on getting the scanner going, the same parameters of control and selection for the printer are not there for the scanner. XSane and other scan programs don't recognise
the Mp270 or throw up 'Canon not responding' prompt. Searched MCC software for scan meta packages and plug ins. No new ones found. What's available is already loaded.
M5 already recognises 'Canon multi-functional peripheral' How do I get the software to recognise it as well?

should be able to. they are likely listed under "task-printing-" in MCC software management. just un-check the boxes.

Did you attempt to add the scanner via MCC => hardware => set up scanner?
Try and see if Gimp will initiate a scan.

Hi benmc,

Yes I did attempt to add the scanner in MCC. It does recognize the make and model and has named it. However no graphics program in my system, from Gimp to Libre Draw recognises it. As do the scanner programs I have. That's the situation now.

if you "alt+F2" - run command "simple scan" or from "graphics" in the application launcher menu choose "simple scan",
If not installed , please install it.
when the GUI pops up, what is listed under preferences? 1st icon top left

there is a drop down list under "scan source", check that your MF device is the option.
it may be set to a web camera or tv card

Happy Easter!

On Simple scan, it recognises my Canon device. It's the only one on the menu.

Hi bemmc,

Is there a way to query the system to know if drivers, rpm's or plugins are missing? Can the system be forced to respond to the scanner?

Sorry, but I really need it working soon.

You can try to run harddrake2: http://doc.mageia.org/mcc/5/en/content/harddrake2.html
Apart from that it would be good if you could provide the output as root of
Code: Select all
lspcidrake -v
sane-find-scanner
scanimage -L
Cauldron is not for the faint of heart!
Caution: Hot, bubbling magic inside. May explode or cook your kittens!

not recommended for daily use but try running simple-scan as root. ie, invoke an instance of "terminal" from MCC and then type in "simpl" then press "tab", should auto fill.

this is just to check that the system can actually access the scanner.

Hi benmc,

You have got to run me through the exact steps for this. Konsole won't allow me to log in as root, only user. I can only log in as root in X. Buuuuut what do I know. I get what you're are trying to do to force the computer to recognise the scan device. I have already selected this device, on scanner sharing in scanner set up, MCC. Now Xsane also recognizes it. Both simple scan and xsane won't engage it though. I live in hope.

from the output of one of the commands, from the good Doktor5000, the scanner was recognised, but access denied because of permissions.

acting as root this should not be a problem.
So. start Mageia Control Centre, under the tab " System" you will find "open a console as administrator". start a konsole instance
Then enter "simplescan" and it should launch the gui with root privileges.

you should then be able to scan.

note all the "should"s in this.

Have started console as administrator and I'm lost. Sorry. I don't know what to enter to get a response to get me to password so I can enter 'simplescan'. Not a programmer so you have to give me exact strings to enter.

If console in typical Mageia install says something like:
Code: Select all
[user@hostname dirname]$

then you're logged as a user

And if console says something like:
Code: Select all
[root@hostname dirname]#

you're logged as root.

Command whoami also helps :D.

You can login as root by use of:
Code: Select all
su -

Please note the dash.

EDIT: added su

I should have added, "then press the "enter " key ."

The reason I asked that you start an instance of Konsole through MCC is, the password has already been entered, you dont need to enter it again.
