Help getting old Coolscan III working using PCMCIA SCSI card

Postby OS1 » Mar 1st, '16, 16:27

Hi All,

I have been given an aged Nikon Coolscan III scanner, which although old is better that any other method of scanning negatives I've currently got!

It's a SCSI scanner and all I've got is a laptop. I have an equally old PCMCIA SCSI card. The setup doesn't work! The SCSI card used to work just fine with what was probably Mandrake back then! It seems to be recognised by the system as a dmesg log line is produced. Harddrake2 reports the device as being unrecognised despite apparently being associated with a kernel module.

So step 1, please can anyone help me to get the PCMCIA card working or suggest a PCMCIA SCSI card that's known to work. The scanner is of such an age that I don't want to spend huge amounts just to get a vintage item working!Equally I love a challenge

Thanks,
OS1

Can you please provide the output as root of
Code: Select all
lspcidrake -v
sane-find-scanner
sane-find-scanner -f
scanimage -L

According to HardDrake2 the SCSI PCMCIA card is an Unknown/Other device and it's using module fdomain_cs

There's a kernel oops and the stack trace printed in your dmesg output, that might be an issue.
See e.g. https://lists.debian.org/debian-kernel/ ... 00000.html or the full report: https://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugrepo ... bug=444818

edit doktor5000: check the resulting upstream kernel bug: https://bugzilla.kernel.org/show_bug.cgi?id=9105 - you will probably not be able to use that card.

Can you provide the output as root of
Code: Select all
pccardctl ident

You might have to install pcmciautils for that command.
Cauldron is not for the faint of heart!
Caution: Hot, bubbling magic inside. May explode or cook your kittens!
