HP LaserJet M277dw printing slow

HP LaserJet M277dw printing slow

Postby rfemali » Feb 6th, '25, 08:35

I am running Mageia 9 and the has always been a delay with printing to my HP LaserJet M277dw. I never paid that much attention to it as I don't often have to print. Tonight I timed it and it was 34 seconds between pages printing in duplex.

For duplex printing the default for dry time between front and back might be quite long, as the printer wants the freshly printed page to dry before turning it to avoid smearing, at least for inkjet printers
Have a look at https://h30434.www3.hp.com/t5/Printing- ... -p/6014218
and check if in options if dry time or paper type can be changed accordingly, maybe it applies the default values as for inkjet printers.

Thanks doctor500. I checked today and the issue persists printing single sided. The printer will spin up, print 1 page, and then spin down for 30ish seconds before starting the cycle again. I Almost like it is only being sent one page at a time. While poking around at it I wound up running hp-doctor which told me that the distro (ie mageia 9) was either deprecated or not yet supported. I noticed I have hplip ver 3.22.10 and there is a newer version downloadable from HP (but only for Mandrake) so I am wondering if that would be worth a shot. BTW, I have 2 Mageia 9 system running in the house and they are both behaving the same way.

That's not really about the version, hplip always said that because Mageia is not in the list of their known distros.

You can only hope that somebody else with a similar Laserjet will chime in and report if this issue also exists for them.

Apart from that you may want to add some actual details. How is the printer connected, USB, Wifi, ... ? How did you setup the printer, using Mageia Control Center or the hplip setup ?
What documents are you printing (file format) and what amount of pages. 2 pages? 10 ? 50-100 ? color / monochrome only ? From what application do you print ?
What about copying on the printer, is it the same issue? Did you try a hard-reset of the printer yet?

I own that printer about 8 years. Just now I printed a page and that started to came out of printer in about 12 seconds. On memory intense pages can take especially a lot of time. But printer reacts within a second to show print notification and start mechanics. I guess it needs a few seconds to heat and/or charge to high voltage.

§ OP say the delay exist between pages, so not a warm-up issue.

§ @rfemali, to see if it as a CPU/Memory or other (Printer/port/computer) performance issue: does this also happen with very simple pages, say only "Hello" on two pages, how long does it take time between the pages then?

I've owned a Laserjet M254dw printer, essentially the printer-only version of the all-in-one M277dw, for a few months now. I noticed the same thing as the OP, a delay that was greater than that needed by my older usb-only Laserjet CP1215.

The delay was longest for complex multipage color documents printed in duplex. I puzzled over it for a while, and eventually considered that the wifi connection, sometimes shared among several devices, might be a bottleneck, with the printer waiting for all the data for both pages before rendering.

So, I tried connecting the printer to my router using the Ethernet port. The difference was dramatic when printing from the desktop computer I usually use for printing, as it also uses a wired connection. Less so with computers with wifi connections, but still better than before.

The OP's mileage may vary, of course.
