[DONE] Brother HL 2040

[DONE] Brother HL 2040

Postby alaric » Aug 9th, '11, 13:53

I have just installed Mageia on an Acer Inspire with 2gig of memory. Print jobs download to the printer but only a blank page comes out. I had the same problem with Mandriva 10.1 .2. I finally got the printer to work after hours of experiment and I still don't know what actually changed. In 10.2 it only prints if I turn the printer off and on again. From then on it works until the next boot. If this can't be fixed I will re-install Mandrake 10 which does work and I will make sure I don't respond to suggestions I upgrade. I thought I could turn off the pop up as You used to be able to do but instead the download started at once and stuffed my sources so I had to let it run. So far I am not impressed. Installing the printer was a proper mess and could only be done via the troubleshoot screens.

Not sure if this works, but worth trying I guess; I just explained on another thread how to make the Brother DCP-195C work :

Brother DCP-195C works fine, but you have to go after install indeed to:

http://localhost:631/printers

If you get a browser pop-up to login : User name = root , password is your root pasword

Click on the printer, check whether connection says usb://Brother/model
Probably it says something completely different, so follow these steps:

Click on Administration > Modify printer

Go through all the steps, afterwards connection will show usb://Brother/model

You might want to check http://welcome.solutions.brother.com/bs ... prn1a.html

Now it should work!

Thank you for your help. I will try it if I go back to Mageia. I got so frustrated I switched to Debian.

FWIW, I have an HL2040. It has worked very well for me. I went to Brothers site, and downloaded the two packages they provide, the Cups wrapper driver, and the LPR driver. install them, and then configure in cups admin with http://localhost:631.

See this link http://welcome.solutions.brother.com/bsc/public_s/id/linux/en/download_prn.html#HL-2040

There are 'howto install' instructions there, I followed those...

Thanks. I did that too but it still didn;t print. I could only get into the configuration thing through the trouble shooter. There were a list of drivers but all grayed out.

Well, if you install the Brother drivers, you don't need to select a driver.

No, I know I shouldn't need to. Unfortunately the instructions didn't work. I suspect that the drivers were installed in the wrong place. There were at least five places which referred to the HL2040 and even more relating to Cups. Which of those should have had the drivers I don't know. I researched printers. Suse 11.1 and .2 has apparently the same problem and requires some script writing to make it work. The Debian site said it would work and it did without any fuss. Sorry, but I don't know enough to programme work arounds.

Anyway, thanks for all the help. Mandriva no longer offers any help at all and one can no longer convert to a paid query. Apparently one either signs up to an exorbitant help system with monthly payments or one struggles.

Well, my parents also have a Brother printer, so i know that first-hand.
Just install the two RPM packages, as camorri wrote already, and you're done.
For some you may need to change the connection, but you do that within CUPS
when the printer is already setup.

Could you please post exactly what you have done so far?
Please also post the output of
Code: Select all
rpm -qa | grep -i hl2040

For clarification, normally you only do step 1. then step 3. and the second command from step 4.3
of http://welcome.solutions.brother.com/bs ... _prn3.html
and the same for http://welcome.solutions.brother.com/bs ... prn1a.html

So download those two files:
http://www.brother.com/cgi-bin/agreemen ... nglish_lpr
http://www.brother.com/cgi-bin/agreemen ... nglish_gpl
install both with rpm -Uhv *.rpm and then open up CUPS by looking at this adress in your browser:
http://localhost:631
Do you see the Printer when you click on Printer?

I spent about 10 days trying to get it to print on Mandriva 10.1 without success. The printer auto installed but did not respond when a print job was sent and the job remained in the print queue. I got tired of the problem and re-installed version 10 which works without problems. Unfortunately Mandriva kept telling me to upgrade. You used to be able to shut that notice down but when I tried it immediately started the download of .2 and stuffed my repositories so I let it run. Again the printer auto installed but did not print. I cannot now remember all the things I did but I know i downloaded the Brother drivers and installed them in the correct order. I finally got some action but only if I turned the printer off and then on again. Dmesg showed that the printer was recognized and active.

I tried Mageia to see if this system overcame the problem. It didn't and frankly I could not be bothered doing any more fiddling. I am now using Debian which worked as it should without any fuss.

I do appreciate all the help that has been offered but i doubt if I will go back to either Mandriva or Mageia.
