Webcam stopped working after upgrading to mageia 5 [DONE]

Hello!

I did an upgrade from Mageia 4 to 5 (32 bit) using the classic installer. Everything worked fine and so I used the "urpme --auto-orphans" to remove the orphan packages.

After all the webcam stopped working.

I tried to configure it using the MCC, and so I realize that the webcam was listed twice there (see the images below).

Maybe there are some conflicting modules or some module is not being loaded, but I don't know how to deal with that. I also thought that the "urpme" could have removed some package needed for the webcam, but if there was the case it would not be listed on MCC.

How can I solve this problem?

Thank you and sorry for my poor English.

What happens if you run any application that uses your webcam, say cheese, or e.g. vlc ?

Hello doktor 5000!

When I run wxcam the system shows this message (translated from portuguese by me):

Impossible to open /dev/video0. Please, check if the system has the correct driver for your camera or change the device on: Settings->Preferences

So, checking the preferences it shows me 2 devices (video0 and video1). When I change the device from video0 to video1 and restart the application it works fine, but just for the first time. If I close the app and try to do the same it doesn't work.

I tried using VLC, Ekiga, Skype, Jitsi, but didn't work. Wmwebcam worked: the system displays a small box in the corner with the images obtained.

So, the webcam is recognized by the system, but works only with some apps. I don't know why the system shows 2 devices, because there is only one integrated webcam.

Thank you!

Only one device listed, hence the programs should also only offer one device.

Dumb question, the webcam is an internal one, meaning you cannot easily disconnect and reconnect it? Or is it an external USB one?

Sorry, I forgot to say: it's an internal camera integrated on the netbook.

Then I'm out of clues ... my guess is that it's either an issue with the libv4l wrappers (v4l = video for linux)
or some issue with the driver for the webcam for newer kernels ...

Thank you anyway, doktor5000!

I think my next steps are this: testing with the livedvd for knowing if it was an upgrade issue or if my hardware is not adequated to Mageia 5 (newer kernels, etc).

Having any other information I will put it here.

Best!

That's definitely not the case, I mean this is a simple webcam ...

I agree! After the tests with the livedvd I'll have more information...
---EDITED---
I tested with the livedvd and the webcam worked fine with several softwares (vlc, wxcam, skype, jitsi), so definetively it's an update issue or a problem with urpme --auto-orphans. I'll make some more tests, but probably will reinstall MGA5.

Bad news: I've done a clean install using both livedvd and classical installer and the webcam doesn't work. The strange is: using the livedvd it worked fine...

Have no idea of what is this!
---EDITED---
We are discussing this issue on Mageia brazilian forum. There we are guessing that it could be an udev problem. I'm searching for this and found two topics on Linux Questions:
http://www.linuxquestions.org/questions ... 175427378/
http://www.linuxquestions.org/questions ... am-374359/

But I really don't know how to deal with udev...

just adding some info incase it helps.

would be good if we knew what webcam it is so other people on here can either confirm your findings or disagree.

im using the classic install of kde/lxde based mga5

my webcam works fine on my ultrabook labptop.

heres the details for you to compare.

Code: Select all
[peter@localhost ~]$ lsusb
Bus 002 Device 004: ID 8087:07da Intel Corp.
Bus 002 Device 003: ID 04f2:b330 Chicony Electronics Co., Ltd Asus 720p CMOS webcam

peter@localhost ~]$ dmesg|grep Chicony
[    4.629190] usb 2-1.5: Manufacturer: Chicony Electronics Co.,Ltd.
[peter@localhost ~]$

root@localhost ~]# lsmod|grep usbcore
usbcore               239242  7 btusb,uvcvideo,rtsx_usb,ehci_hcd,ehci_pci,xhci_hcd,xhci_pci

Hello, Peter!

I was very busy in the last days, so I couldn't answer before.

The information you requested is here:
Code: Select all
lsmod|$ lsusb
Bus 001 Device 002: ID 13d3:5108 IMC Networks
Bus 001 Device 001: ID 1d6b:0002 Linux Foundation 2.0 root hub
Bus 005 Device 001: ID 1d6b:0001 Linux Foundation 1.1 root hub
Bus 004 Device 001: ID 1d6b:0001 Linux Foundation 1.1 root hub
Bus 003 Device 001: ID 1d6b:0001 Linux Foundation 1.1 root hub
Bus 002 Device 001: ID 1d6b:0001 Linux Foundation 1.1 root hub

I know from the MCC that the vendor is Sonix.
Code: Select all
$ dmesg|grep Sonix
[   10.684410] usb 1-2: Manufacturer: Sonix Technology Co., Ltd.

And the last:
Code: Select all
# lsmod|grep usbcore
usbcore               208183  5 uhci_hcd,uvcvideo,ehci_hcd,ehci_pci,usbhid
usb_common             13504  1 usbcore

Just adding some information. I've tested with several distributions (live cds of Debian, Manjaro, Slitaz, Puppy Slacko, OpenSuse) and the webcam didn't work with any. It worked only with the Mageia 5 livedvd, as I said before.

Thank you all!

I don't know what happened, but the webcam came back to live! It's working now. I suspect it has something to do with system upgrades, but I'm not sure.

But the problem is solved. I'll try to find out what happened.

Thank you all!

You can query the most recently installed 250 packages together with the date of installation via
Code: Select all
rpm -qa --last | head -250

Maybe it helps.
