SOLVED Black Screen After Boot

SOLVED Black Screen After Boot

Postby stevegesn » Sep 15th, '14, 03:28

Hi everybody,
I'm new to Mageia but not Linux. I started way back with Mandrake 8.0 .. Anyway. My problem is that after I installed my updates for the new install of 4.1 my GUI blacked out. I get all the other pictures while booting up, and even the welcome screen, but the Start Menu, Desktop, etc are all gone.
What happened? I can't send any info because of the screen problem. If anyone knows how to get my desktop back, please help!
Thanks in advance
Steve :?:

You can also check some of the hints here: https://wiki.mageia.org/en/Mageia_4_Err ... e_CD.2FDVD
Choosing failsafe mode in bootloader shoulds still get you a text login, where you can run drakx11 as mentioned in Errata to reconfigure the graphics driver.

I'm curious, if you don't have a terminal and only a black screen, how did you try to adjust the display setting? Or do you mean in the OSD menu of your monitor?

Sorry, I wasn't clear.
I get everything, boot splash and there is a Welcome screen that does appear. It will allow you to do a few things like go into control panel lauch firefox even add programs, updates and such. But it's no good because there is no Gui display screen to launch it.
Thanks
Steve

Not a problem,
Perhaps my old school terminology is confusing. - See when I first installed 4.1 it was fine. It went through all the procedures it was supposed to do.
log in screen, boot splash, Welcome screen, and the display was beautiful. Tool bar on bottom, Start Menu and the Desktop display was fine and with GUI's on it. OK, I did the update, it seemed to be ok at first, it did log in, boot splash, and welcome screen, but there was no desktop, no display, Gui's anything. The welcome screen allows you to change certain things and add ons Thing is, without the desktop there, start menu I have no way of launching programs, unless I'm missing something. That can't possibly be the way it looks?
Anyway, if I'm still confusing you, I can take pictures with my cell phone and post them for you.
Thanx again
Steve

What desktop environment did you choose during installation? KDE, GNOME ... ?

you should be able to access the run command [ alt+f2 ] and you can start most things from there. just type the prog name, eg firefox

you say you can boot to safe mode,
run as root " urpmi --auto-update ", something may have been missed in the update due to a sync issue with your local mirror.

It's OK, It was something in my Mandriva 2012.2 installation making it mess up, so I copied all needed files and erased my hard drive with a fresh install of 4.1 Runs Great
