Re: GAVE UP! there seems to be no way to play dvds on this !

please check following:

- is your tainted repository active? Please read this:
https://wiki.mageia.org/en/Software_management or
https://wiki.mageia.org/en/Installing_a ... g_software

If you are not sure, if the tainted repo is activated please post the outcome of:
Code: Select all
urpmq --list-media active

If the tainted repos are not active, please do so (see link above) and run
Code: Select all
urpmi.update -a
urpmi -a vlc
to update the version with the tainted version.

If the tainted repos are activated, then you need to install libdvdcss2 (for a 32bit system) or lib64dvdcss2 for a 64bit system.

For playing commercial DVD's you'll likely need the Tainted version of vlc.
So if you activate the Tainted repositories then update it will probably work.

- Open Mageia Control Center (mcc)
- go to 'Software Management'
- go to 'Configure media sources for install and update'
- then tick the 'Tainted Release' and 'Tainted Updates' - (not Testing or Debug!)

then finally run the updater (MCC --> Software Management' --> 'Update your System')

then you should have the tainted version from vlc installed

It looks as it did not update the vlc
please show the out put of
Code: Select all
rpm -qa | grep vlc

And please use the code tags for the output (like it is described here: ftp://ftp5.gwdg.de/pub/linux/mandriva/m ... e_tags.ogv). This makes it more readable. Thanks...

For comparison, this shows it from my computer:
Code: Select all
[root@Rechner Downloads]# rpm -qa | grep vlc
vlc-plugin-common-2.1.2-1.mga4.tainted
lib64vlccore7-2.1.2-1.mga4.tainted
vlc-plugin-pulse-2.1.2-1.mga4.tainted
vlc-plugin-theora-2.1.2-1.mga4.tainted
lib64vlc5-2.1.2-1.mga4.tainted
vlc-2.1.2-1.mga4.tainted
Please note the 'tainted' tag - this should be also present in your out put. If not please use
Code: Select all
urpmi -a vlc
but you need the Tainted repos activated.

I don't believe the graphical update tool checks release repositories only update.
Running as root in a terminal
Code: Select all
urpmi --auto-update
should install the tainted version of vlc.

If you only have one DVD drive in your box, then you need to do the following:
vlc -> Media -> Open disc -> DVD
and then change "Disc device" from /dev/dvd1 to /dev/dvd

Another Mageia user already reported that bug to vlc developers, should be fixed in later versions:
https://trac.videolan.org/vlc/ticket/10712

Please try again as described previously, but in addition tick the box "No disc menus". Does it play now?

Please also show the output of
Code: Select all
rpm -qa | grep -e vlc -e lib.*dvd | sort

Re: [DONE] UPDATE AFTER HARDDRIVE CRASH REPLACED EVERYTHING

Postby magump » Dec 26th, '15, 19:00

Sorry about the previous post. Didn't get to finish. As I stated, VLC simply would not playback a DVD. I tried everything mentioned in this post with no results. This is the only post I found on this subject. Therefore I went to this website: https://ask.fedoraproject.org/en/questi ... fedora-18/ from Fedora support and cut/pasted the following command in terminal with root privelages:rpm -Uvh http://rpm.livna.org/repo/18/x86_64/lib ... x86_64.rpm

Vlc now plays perfectly. Hope this helps anyone in the future. It worked for me.
