You can simply boot to failsafe mode by selecting it in the bootloader, and then apply the workaround.

Yes, thanks. I had already tried that and found no keyboard response. That seems to be the problem. When I tried it again just now the disk light flashed madly so maybe the system has got itself into a race condition. This new machine came from a company which builds bespoke machines for gamers. The motherboard may be new to Linux. The whole machine is lightning fast - 4 seconds from boot to login screen. So I suspect timing and contention problems. Have to wait until the updated kernels and dkms come back into sync perhaps.

Well it solved itself. Another reboot and it suddenly fell into place. 3.12.25 now running nvidia OK.

Well, it's not really solved, and cannot be solved, hence [Workaround] ;)
