Totem Unable to play youtube videos

Postby ssivil » Jul 10th, '11, 01:44

Has anyone been able to play a youtube video with Totem? When a click on video after choosing "Find", I get a gstreamer supporting error. Thanks.

Well, here youtube videos play fine with flash player.
For clarification, do you want to open Totem and play the video in Totem or do you want the video to be played in your browser?

FWIW, the totem youtube plugin has gotten broken and fixed many times due to youtube changing the API, the pages layout... etc. (So, IMHO, you should look for an alternative way to watch youtube videos, other than relying on that fragile plugin, I know this isn't so helpful, though...).

There is more to this.
totem will not play *.flv. I have made .flv clips to test and also downloaded youtube *.flv files from youtube - the result is the same. There is sound but no video.
Code: Select all
[baz@localhost kdlvideo]$ totem tyre.flv

The same files play fine with ffplay, xine and mplayer.

Testing totem with a perfectly good mpeg4 file I am seeing similar errors and again only the sound plays.

Well in both cases it states clearly that there is a gstreamer plugin missing ...

So totem needs it's own gstreamer plugins that Mageia does not yet have anywhere?
If there is one for each container then there are probably quite a few missing as I only tested flv and mp4.

Barry, that looks like a different issue; a missing codec, without a file to test with (a link to some youtube get_video would be nice), try gstreamer0.10-ffmpeg (you might need the one from tainted).

Thanks Ahmad - Yes that fixes it for .flv and .mp4.
What is odd is (to me) is that gstreamer0.10-ffmpeg is in core, so why is it not a require for totem?
The gstreamer requires for totem are
gstreamer0.10-plugins-base[>= 0.10.26]
gstreamer0.10-plugins-good
gstreamer0.10-soup
There is no gstreamer0.10-ffmpeg in tainted that I can see.

EDIT (while I can)
Almost forgot http://rg3.github.com/youtube-dl/download.html
is a small script to which you pass the URL of a youtube video, which it will then download as <random name>.flv in your home directory.
I did include links etc. in the rather long post I (almost) made last night, but as usual the forum ate it when I checked a link and I gave up in disgust.

gstreamer0.10-ffmpeg is to be found in core/release

Yes that's what I just said - and as it's in core, then surely it could be a require for totem?
Or am I missing something?

Why just don't install? I have it is installed, but didn't do this at my own initiative.
So it must have been installed during initial installation, or at any point i was installing something else.

Same here. But I have seen cases where it was not installed, although totem was installed. I guess, it is a dependency of another popular application.

BTW: What's the opposite of 'urpmq -d package_name' ?

That has the correct requires, no doubt ;)
What's the opposite of 'urpmq -d package_name' ?
What do you mean by "opposite" ?
Are you looking for all the packages that share a common dependency?
Sounds a bit like searching for a number in a telephone directory :shock:

Try
Code: Select all
urpmq --requires gstreamer0.10-ffmpeg
or
Code: Select all
urpmq --requires-recursive gstreamer0.10-ffmpeg
Either way totem is not on the list of packages that require it.

Try

urpmq --requires gstreamer0.10-ffmpeg
or
Code: Select all
urpmq --requires-recursive gstreamer0.10-ffmpeg

man urpmq says:
Code: Select all
     -d  This is the same as --requires-recursive
This is the query what requirements an application has. So I ask
Code: Select all
urpmq -d totem
to see whether gstreamer0.10-ffmpeg is a requirement of totem. What I wanted to do is the reverse question: "which package requires gstreamer0.10-ffmpeg?"
Or is this always a two-way dependency? Like "if totem requires gstreamer0.10-ffmpeg then gstreamer0.10-ffmpeg requires totem" ?

It does for me and the --requires-recursive switch just adds all the rpms that require one or more rpms in the --requires list.

Well for the hell of it I wrote a little script which is checking the whole of core-release (in my own local mirror) for packages that require gstreamer0.10-ffmpeg it's been going about an hour and is up to f*
So far it has only found these packages -
arista-0.9.5-2.mga1.noarch.rpm
emesene-1.6.3-4.mga1.x86_64.rpm
flexdock-demo-0.5.2-3.mga1.x86_64.rpm

I will post the full list tomorrow. ;)

There is probably a faster way than this :-
Code: Select all
#!/bin/bash
# whatuses
dep=$1
for currpkg in /repo/Mageia/distrib/1/x86_64/media/core/release/*; do
if urpmq --requires-recursive $currpkg | grep -q $dep; then
echo $currpkg >> temp.txt
fi
echo $currpkg
done

EDIT
@Ken: I think you got it wrong - does it show those above your way?

That's why I asked about the two-way relation. 'urpmq --requires gstreamer0.10-ffmpeg' answers the question "Which packages are required by gstreamer0.10-ffmpeg"?. Does it also answer "Which package requires gstreamer0.10-ffmpeg?" ? barjac seems to understand what I mean :)

Du, my mistake, it should be
Code: Select all
urpmq --whatrequires gstreamer0.10-ffmpeg
I get four packages including gstreamer0.10-ffmpeg itself.
The others are
arista
fmj
gnash

Edit: Barry I'm running a 32bit system so of course I will not see the 64bit rpms your seeing.

Nice one Ken - there had to be a better way! Just shows what you can find in the man pages ;)

I was wondering why it missed out the ones I was finding with the script, but they are also found with
--whatrequires-recursive

So getting back to the question - which of those has isadora installed to get gstreamer0.10-ffmpeg installed without doing it manually I wonder?

I think we need a bug report asking for gstreamer0.10-ffmpeg to be added to the requires for totem.

EDIT
Try this - it will show which packages you have installed that require gstreamer0.10-ffmpeg - in my case it only outputs itself. (takes about 30 seconds to run) EDIT Changed to single line command :-
Code: Select all
for i in $(urpmq --whatrequires-recursive gstreamer0.10-ffmpeg); do rpm -qa | grep -q $i && echo $i; done

Code: Select all
$ urpmf --suggests gstreamer0.10-ffmpeg
phonon-gstreamer:gstreamer0.10-ffmpeg

So, if you do a default KDE4 installation you'll get gst-ffmpeg, which is why isadora has it by default, I think. urpmf is more robust sometimes, it prints all the requires/suggests tags:
Code: Select all
$ urpmf --requires gstreamer0.10-ffmpeg
gstreamer0.10-ffmpeg:libbz2.so.1()(64bit)
gstreamer0.10-ffmpeg:libc.so.6()(64bit)
gstreamer0.10-ffmpeg:libc.so.6(GLIBC_2.2.5)(64bit)
gstreamer0.10-ffmpeg:libc.so.6(GLIBC_2.3)(64bit)
gstreamer0.10-ffmpeg:libc.so.6(GLIBC_2.3.4)(64bit)
gstreamer0.10-ffmpeg:libc.so.6(GLIBC_2.4)(64bit)
gstreamer0.10-ffmpeg:libc.so.6(GLIBC_2.7)(64bit)
gstreamer0.10-ffmpeg:libglib-2.0.so.0()(64bit)
gstreamer0.10-ffmpeg:libgobject-2.0.so.0()(64bit)
gstreamer0.10-ffmpeg:libgstaudio-0.10.so.0()(64bit)
gstreamer0.10-ffmpeg:libgstbase-0.10.so.0()(64bit)
gstreamer0.10-ffmpeg:libgstreamer-0.10.so.0()(64bit)
gstreamer0.10-ffmpeg:libgstvideo-0.10.so.0()(64bit)
gstreamer0.10-ffmpeg:libm.so.6()(64bit)
gstreamer0.10-ffmpeg:libm.so.6(GLIBC_2.2.5)(64bit)
gstreamer0.10-ffmpeg:liborc-0.4.so.0()(64bit)
gstreamer0.10-ffmpeg:libpthread.so.0()(64bit)
gstreamer0.10-ffmpeg:libpthread.so.0(GLIBC_2.2.5)(64bit)
gstreamer0.10-ffmpeg:libz.so.1()(64bit)
gstreamer0.10-ffmpeg:rtld(GNU_HASH)
fmj:gstreamer0.10-ffmpeg
arista:gstreamer0.10-ffmpeg
gnash:gstreamer0.10-ffmpeg

Before the ':' requires what's after it, so gstreamer0.10-ffmpeg requires libgobject-2.0.so.0()(64bit), whereas gnash requires gstreamer0.10-ffmpeg. You can filter it down, to print what requires gstreamer0.10-ffmpeg:
Code: Select all
$ urpmf --requires :gstreamer0.10-ffmpeg
fmj:gstreamer0.10-ffmpeg
arista:gstreamer0.10-ffmpeg
gnash:gstreamer0.10-ffmpeg

or use 'rpmq --requires gstreamer0.10-ffmpeg'

To print what gstreamer0.10-ffmpeg requires use 'urpmf --requires gstreamer0.10-ffmpeg:'. Or 'urpmq --whatrequires gstreamer0.10-ffmpeg'.

Note that it's not a strict requires of totem, as totem can work without it. At best, it could be a suggests in the totem package (you can raise the issue in a bug report or a post to -dev to get the input of the GNOME veteran maintainers (e.g. pterjan, blino.. etc), as you can see totem doesn't even suggest gst-plugins-ugly :)).
