To the powers that be. After 6yrs with a Nvidia GTX 260 graphics card a new Nvidia 28nm Maxwell 750 Ti should be a good deal. The question is using cauldron with the Nvidia 331.49 drivers what is the correct graphic card to pick the 8000 or 400. perhaps it's time to do a new Nvidia series with the maxwell chip set. The 750 is working but it is using the 400 and above as 8000 and above used with the 260 failed on the new card. so the 400 was given a go. self doubt leaves me asking if this is the best that can be done. I could be your 1st lab rat with the 750 Ti.

What do you mean by proper driver? Only the 400 and above should be working.

I waited for the proper Nvidea-current-Kernel-desktop upgrade from 331.38 to 331.49 before pulling my old GTX 260 (200 series chip set - 8000) and installing the GTX 750 Ti (GM 107 Maxwell 100 series) so when the boot up failed to resolve the new hardware using the current 331.49 driver I didn't know what proprietary driver to pick. Choice by chip series ahead of 400,800 or whatever marketing number is popular could have helped. The XFdrake or mcc graphics card setup didn't pick the driver needed for the new card. They picked custom vga. so not having to make a choice for 6 years with graphics card setup can cause a little anguish. user history- Mandrake/Mandriva/Mageia .

What is your current problem? Is the driver working or not?
In case not, please post the output of the following commands:
- Code: Select all
rpm -qa | grep nvidia | sort
lspcidrake -v | grep -i vga
grep -i driver /var/log/Xorg.0.log

yes it is working. I just thought the choices in the graphics card setup confusing and the use of the chip series at the front of 400 and above would be of help. perhaps for mga5. sorry to have been a pain.

I don't get your problem at all. In the driver selection it says "NVIDIA GeForce 400 series and later" (which actually uses the same driver as "NVIDIA GeForce 8100 to GeForce 360") which is called nvidia-current which is working. If you find that confusing, complain to nvidia, we don't make the driver.
You can check the choices via
- Code: Select all
$ grep -i nvidia /usr/share/ldetect-lst/Cards+

NAME NVIDIA RIVA 128
NAME NVIDIA RIVA TNT to GeForce 2
#DRIVER2 nvidia71xx (not compatible with x.org server 1.6)
NAME NVIDIA GeForce 2 MX to GeForce 4
#DRIVER2 nvidia96xx (not compatible with X.org server 1.11)
NAME NVIDIA GeForce FX series
DRIVER2 nvidia173
NAME NVIDIA GeForce 6100 to GeForce 7950
DRIVER2 nvidia304
#DRIVER2_NO_SSE nvidia96xx
NAME NVIDIA GeForce 8100 to GeForce 360

#DRIVER2_NO_SSE nvidia96xx
NAME NVIDIA GeForce 400 series and later

I think i understand his confusion.
the GT250/260 was in fact a re-badged gtx 8xxx (not sure which exact model.) from the 4600, 5600, 6600, 7600 series
whereas newer recent models ie GT460 GT560 GT660 GT760 and ti/GTX variants are of course all 400 and above.
none of these numbers has any relation to the now very old geforce 200, 300, 400 series which ran prior to the 4600 era

Well, those are nvidia model politics - nothing we can influence. What do you suggest to improve that?
