[SOLVED] New to Mageia, unable to get video and sound

First of all, I want to say that I am really impressed with Mageia as a whole. With a minimum of problem I was able to get online, and the general gui is quite attractive. Kudos to you developers and maintainers.

Aah, but how do I get my (MP3, MP4, etc.) videos and sound working? I looked around in the forums and online elsewhere and saw that I was not the only one that had this problem. I followed someone else's advice about including tainted sources. I also downloaded - or tried to - various other components I thought were necessary, but still no results.

I have a Dell Inspiron laptop.

This might be helpful:
Code: Select all
[root@localhost tom]# rpm -qa | grep vlc
lib64vlccore5-2.0.8-2.mga3.tainted
vlc-2.0.8-2.mga3.tainted
vlc-plugin-common-2.0.8-2.mga3.tainted
vlc-plugin-theora-2.0.8-2.mga3.tainted
lib64vlc5-2.0.8-2.mga3.tainted
vlc-plugin-pulse-2.0.8-2.mga3.tainted

Any help is appreciated.

UPDATE:
This also might be helpful. When I try to play an MP4 I get this:

-------------------------------
Videos requires additional plugins for this operation:

MPEG-4 AAC decoder
MPEG-4 AAC decoder
H.264 decoder
-------------------------------

Note the redundant entry, FWIW. It also prompted for a (fruitless) search for the missing items.

Tom in China.

Hi there.
Well, playing mp3 works out of the box. For the videos, you don't use VLC to play them?
As you've already got the tainted vlc version installed who's able to play them ...

For the message you've posted, that doesn't come from VLC - which player did you use for that?

"Videos" is totem, which is the default video player. In order to use VLC, you need to choose it in the right-click context menu, or set it as the default in System Settings - File Associations.

Thanks, Jim and Doktor 5000. Somehow I hadn't been able to make VLC be the preferred app (or I was just doing something else wrong). Anyway, it seems to be fixed now and all is hunky-dory.

BTW, I have lived in both of your countries (Scotland late 50s and Germany parts of the 50s, 60s, and 70s - born there too).

Thanks again.
