Choppy video Intel GMA 3150

Mageia 2 KDE on Toshiba NB305 Intel Atom 455 cpu / N10 graphics / 2 gb ram -/ (drakconf picks Intel 810 and later) driver - video laggy, sometimes choppy, with artifacts

Vectorlinux 7.-0 on HP mini 1000 or PCLOS 2012 on Toshiba NB205 with N270 cpu / Intel 945 GSE graphics / 1gb RAM - youtube videos clean crisp even at 360p

all three laptops tried at home with lowspeed DSL and at local wifi spot with fairly high speed and also tried all three with a USB w/l adapter. - same results. netbooks with low specs on Intel 945 graphics, video is good.

On the Toshiba NB305 - poor video. I know flash plugin version may have something to do with this but am pretty sure this is an Intel N10 graphics issue. I have tried desktop effects on/off, checked display output, shutdown unnecessary processes, and tried xorg drivers with no luck.

1, Have read that running xf86-video-intel may fix issue but can't find them anywhere in repos - and when I do d/l them, will they show up in MCC drakconf when I set graphical server?

2. Are there other flash plugins available in repos I can try ( PCLOS offers alternative flash plugin to try)?

Any help appreciated.
Thanks

[UPDATE: Upgrade to MGA 3 and FF v28 or v30 with HTML5 has resolved laggy/choppy streaming such as youtube as long as I keep mouse cursor OUTSIDE of the FF window! Hope this helps someone with these underpowered N455 GMA 3150 graphics]

Try to verify with "glxinfo" that DRI is active.

I have had some issues like this before and it had to do with my graphic card driver and Xorg configuration. Is regular video choppy at all?

The DSL connection should not cause choppy video, just buffering pauses.

For flash issues and alternatives please have a look at our MAQeia for flash player plugin: viewtopic.php?f=34&t=880
and maybe in viewtopic.php?f=41&t=5337

You can also have a look at viewtopic.php?p=33099#p33099

Tried google chrome flash version in link #3 in doktor5000 link but youtube videos jerky if I use mouse or do anything else while watching streaming.

Where can I download a high quality video to HD to test via VLC player. All I can find is junky 5 second 144p videos to try out the graphics card. I can ty plenty of streaming flash videos but that doesn't help me try out the graphics card.
And yes glxinfo shows:

Just open them in VLC from Youtube links. You need vlc-plugin-lua installed.

Wow streaming from vlc even worse. completely choppy , pixellated and smeared video and choppy audio. Somehow missed the lack of support for the gma 3150 chipset. Selling this netbook and finding something more compatible.

Thanks for the help

Before I ditch this netbook, I looked on the Intel website and the xf86-video-intel driver apparently supports this gma3150 chipset.

1. How do I check if this driver is included in the "i810 and later" default driver chosen by MCC drakconf
2. How do I check if it is included in xorg-intel

If it is in neither of those, how do I remove/blacklist those drivers and install the xf86 intel diver from outside the repos directly from intel?

https://01.org/linuxgraphics/downloads and here https://01.org/linuxgraphics/downloads/ ... ck-release

Any help appreciated
Thanks

Perhaps you should compile your own Kernel and make sure all the correct modules are installed. Alternatively check if the correct modules are loaded in your current Kernel. i810 is quite old and I don't know exactly what is configured as included by default in Mandriva. The gma chips also have their own seperate module in the Kernel, and often this is not included. I can check once I have access to my laptop again

Never compiled kernel before but after d/l ing some test video files it seems video is problem and maybe not flash. I have two other lesser netbooks with much lower specs with Intel 945 graphics that play streaming video fine.

according to lspci -vv kernel module seems to be the i915 but don't know how to tell if that includes the xf86 drivers. From linux-intel notes probably not. Also upgraded xorg- server . .. still choppy. Can't seem to find any test video around 360p that is NOT streaming. It's all low res .avi or mpg or 720 or 1080.

Where are drivers? In the kernel? in modules? In xorg server? all three?

Perhaps you can print "lsmod" and put the result here so we can see which modules are loaded in your Kernel. And "uname -a" also.

According to this link --> https://01.org/linuxgraphics/downloads/ ... ck-release, gma 3150 in the Atom N4xx series is supported. According to synaptic, many of the stack components (or similar in that link) are aready installed, but how to block / blacklist current drivers and use the correct drivers. I do not find xf86-video-intel in any of the repos. Perhaps I should install them outside the repos?

According to wiki https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Intel_GMA#GMA_3150 this driver was added to xorg-video-intel but synaptics only shows X11-server-xorg.

Thanks

And please show the output of
Code: Select all
rpm -qa | grep intel

FWIW, i810 and i915 are kernel modules, that come with the kernel.
x11-driver-video-intel is the package that contains the common X driver for intel chips.

Am usually pretty good about checking hdwr compatibility before purchasing hdwr and installing linux but missed this one. GMA 3150 seems to be problematic for many users including those running Windows. Would be nice to sort this out as the netbook has good specs otherwise.

Strange that netbooks I have with lesser specs run video just fine and also strange that the GMA3150 chipset is very common hdwr but not supported well.

Pineview graphics should be supported since x11-driver-video-intel-2.10, and we currently have x11-driver-video-intel-2.21 in Mageia 3.
Maybe you just need to set a different acceleration method, check https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/In ... ion_method
and also the rest of that wiki page.

Maybe you also need to install vaapi-driver-intel as it seems not installed by default, at least no here (with nvidia graphics though, so YMMV)

You could also be suffering from https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/In ... ntel-DRI_9
as we have the newer 9. versions.

You could also try to disable acceleration, as explained in the alternative method below https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/In ... tel_driver

There is no 20-intel.conf but I created one in /etc/X11/xorg.conf.d as per the archwiki and am about half way thru tips and tricks with no help . will report when done.

Also vaapi-intel is installed according to rpmdrake

Well, it's probably https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/In ... ntel-DRI_9 as all points and the description is the same as in your situation.

Youtube or ( home video at higher resolutions) unwatchable at 480p, jerky at 360p and laggy even at 240 and 144p so there is definitely a problem. Upgraded mesa but no help. Some one in the toshiba forums claims the Atom not only has cpu/gpu combo but also has some HD decoder in the combo and that creates the problem. Was under the impression that N4xx processors were better than N2xx series but apparently the video with the N4xx have video issues.

Lots of complaints about choppy jerky video of this chipset over on the Toshiba forums. Plenty of solutions for wrong resolution but nothing for my issue. Don't know how I missed this one. Win some lose some.

Did you read the wiki page I've sent you? It said to downgrade the libraries, not upgrade them, as the newer ones have the problem.
But anyways ...

I had upgraded before you posted the links to the intel-dri issue, but the upgrade was just from mesa release 1.0 to 1.1.
Will try to downgrade if I can find the proper way to do so as I can't find them in repos but from what I see I am already at ver 8. I have enabled all backports but nothing shows up in rpm drake.

software management show these currently installed:
libdrm_intel1 ver. 2.4.33 release 1.mga2
vaapi-driver-intel ver 1.0.15 release 2.mga2
x11-driver-video-intel ver 2.19.0 release 2.mga2
mesa ver 8.0.5 release 1.1.mga2 <-- version 8
libdri-drivers ver 8.0.5 rel 1.1mga2 <-- version 8
x11-server-xorg ver 1.11.4 rel 2.2.mga2

BTW glxinfo shows direct rendering - YES

Thanks

On the Ubuntu forums it says it does not have the capability to play HD video. They also say the issue is the same in Windows.

I don't know if that is true or not.
I would play around a lot with xorg.conf if I was you. Disable and enable a variety of combinations.

Your hardware setup seems to be right. The problem might not necessarily be due to missing function, but also functions in xorg that isn't supported by your card, and somehow preventing it from working well.

Notice that native res of 1024x600 does not appear to be here in xorg.conf but KDE display in control panel does show the 1024x600 option selected. Also, after each reboot, display output in KDE control panel shows "none" . I set it at LVDS1 and apply but still choppy video.

Not sure if the resolution is related to choppy video. Link to a solution here --> http://www.backtrack-linux.org/forums/s ... 131&page=2 but it sounds very extensive. Don't know if I have time for that.

Any thoughts on the xorg.conf file?
Thnx

Just try to rename it to something else and try starting without one and see what happens.
