Impossible to use nvidia card in laptop with 2 graphic cards

Postby c0legota » Dec 22nd, '12, 21:43

Hi!

I've read a lot at the forum and some threads are like my problem but not sure if it's not solved or I can't undestand it.

Just bought a laptop that has two graphic cards. One Intel HD Graphics 4000 and a nVidia GeForce GT 650. Not sure why there are 2 cards and I suppose Intel was for hdmi or maybe it's on motherboard, but nvidia it's suppossed to be the best.

So I tried to install Mageia 2 from Live CD (64 bits) and full DVD versions both 64 and 32. Some attemps I get worked nouveau driver, but in my last install (full KDE custom choosing packages) only can use xorg: Intel driver.

If I change to nvidia propietary driver when reboot it gives me this error message and stop:

Code: Select all
Failed to start Wait for Plymouth Boot Screen to Quit
See 'systemctl status plymouth-quit-wait. service' for details

Like in this thread: viewtopic.php?f=7&t=3465&p=25536&hilit=plymouth#p25526

Try to start in safe mode and follow hints given in other theads like that or

viewtopic.php?f=7&t=3003&hilit=plymouth#p22601

In all my tries but the last I did success to install nouveau but never nvidia. That attemps was live version and DVD KDE standar install (not the custom one where you choose packages). I used xdriver=nvidia as booting option for install but it installs Intel driver, and later I changed to nouveau. In fact everytime I enter CCM/drakconf/drakx11 it recognizes Intel 810 driver.

Well not sure what more test I can do. Any suggestions, please?

Colegota

Hum... forgot to say that at the first install with kernel 3.3.6 seems to work, but then it requires upgrade to 3.3.8 and then it's when it fails.

sounds like you have something similar to the zenbook ux32

this has the hd4000 in the i7 cpu and a nvidia 650 add on chip

the idea is for power saving reasons the hd4000 is used for most tasks but the nvidia is called upon to

boost performance for 3d/video

there is a bit of software knocking about that i forget the name of that allows you to engage the nvidia hw as required,

####edit heres refrence to that software

http://eternalvoid.net/tutorials/linux-optimus-gt650m/

#####and another thread on this forum of a user with same hardware

viewtopic.php?f=23&t=2868

even in one application in a window.

but you should not be looking to use the nvidia chip all the time, as this would very fast eat your battery,

and is unnessasary as the hd4000 2d performance is more than adequet

google for it and hopefully this will lead you down a path of more information

regards peter

Thanks wintpe!

yes, that's my case. I'm working now with Intel configuration and looking for time to try Bumblebee. I'll keep the thread updated then.
