(Solved) How to kill scrolling bar on side of display?

(Solved) How to kill scrolling bar on side of display?

Postby zxr250cc » Aug 14th, '12, 18:33

Mageia 2, T-23 w/1GB RAM, P-3 1.2 GHz CPU.

I have a T-23 thinkpad that uses Super Savage S-3 shipset and have it running the normal settings, not 3-D, for the desktop. Somehow it has started showing a scrolling bar function on the right edge of the screen and hides some icons that should be on the desktop at the same time. 1024x768 x24 bits color @ 60 Hz is the setting I am using for the LCD display.

When first installed this scrolling bar was not shown. What setting do I adjust to kill this unwanted feature?

cheers,

gcd

I will add that I do not have the scroll bar on the right side of the screen if I log in as root. Only as a normal user. What setting am I missing here?

THIS IS A KDE BUG and is being worked on by them. In my case, the scroll bar decided it no longer wanted to pop up and no longer shows up.

I rebooted the computer, logged in as root and no scroll on the right side. I logged out as root and logged in as user. No scroll on the right side. This has happened before and I still wonder what setting can cause this issue? (I set the computer to allow log in as root, obviously.)

Yes, perhaps.

I have had a notice from the KDE folks working on this quirk and they say that it does not happen with 4.9 version.

I have just logged in as root and no scroll bar on the right. I logged out and logged in as user and no scroll bar on the right but a new quirk has happened in that the desktop icons are much smaller than the default size when installed. How weird...

This bug has reappeared. I was on my wife's laptop and changed her wallpaper and thought the line on the right was in the wallpaper. Anyway it went away so I forgot about it. Tonight it has appeared on my laptop. I seems like the desktop area is huge and you have to scroll but still I never see icons. A simple fix is right click, folder view settings, change to something else then back to folder.

I deleted the activity and created a new one. Still when I reboot it comes back. I'm sure I seen it before but don't know what started it or fixed it. There is a thread about it that goes back to KDE 4.6 or so. I remember fiddling with it before and don't remember and I think it just stopped. But, I probably tried a setting or something that caused it to appear as I set both computers up.

I also seen it on the neighbors computer the other day and didn't notice was it was. I built it too but I have not customized hers so it does just appear I believe. I'm going to try the guest account and see what happens as that would be easiest for most users and not as dangerous as root. Besides you need an account in case something happens to yours.

Previously I had rebooted 8-10 time and everytime I had the scroll bar. After installing the guest account on my laptop I rebooted and logged in as guest and didn't have the scroll bar. I then rebooted and logged in as myself, no scroll bar.

I went to my wife computer and installed the guest account, rebooted and logged in as her, no scroll bar. I may be that having more than one user stops it from happening which would also explain why everyone is not complaining as many people have more than one account.

It also seems to me I had this problem and Isadora told me to try the guest account and it just quit. She may have been helping me with another problem and the scroll bar problems was cured as a bonus. I am in a good position to try and troubleshoot it and pin it down as I have 4 computers to play with, our 2 laptops, my desktop and the neighbors desktop.

It would be nice to be able to change permissions or something on a file and cure it for good as it's my understanding it's been around for a few years, and not just in Mageia but KDE in general. I hope this fixes it because it is a simple fix. Now I'm going to remove the guest account from my laptop and see what happens.
