[SOLVED] Mageia 2 and choppy video

[SOLVED] Mageia 2 and choppy video

Postby Trio3b » Jun 25th, '12, 17:43

[UPDATE #1] Am removing " ATI Radeon 9250" from title of this thread as of 6/26 for two reasons:
1. Not positive that the card was the cause for choppy flash content . Now leaning towards incompatible FF vs flash version as culprit.
2. Although I WAS having issues w/desktop effects, this was resolved by a re-installation of the OS and NOT REMOVING unnecessary packages when prompted by the installer. In those "unneeded packages" were the fglrx and Radeon stuff required and I now have very nice working Desktop Effects.

[UPDATE #2] Turns out the choppy video is caused by flashplayer-plugin versions incompatible with certain videocards. Rolling back to earlier version of fp-plugin did the trick

Hope this helps someone.

Original post below:

ATI Radeon 9250 graphics (256 onboard RAM) on MSI KT6V mainboard running Mageia 2. Install from LiveCD installs the Radeon X1950 and earlier driver. I have choppy youtube video. Sound is OK. I know there is NO choppy video with MDV 2008.1 and PCLOS 2009.1 on this machine.

lspci shows: 01:00.0 VGA compatible controller: ATI Technologies Inc M9+ 5C63 [Radeon Mobility 9200 (AGP)] (rev 01)

Have tried from MCC> hardware> set up grahical server:
1.Xorg ati - same

2. selecting another driver- MCC notifies that there is a proprietary driver do I want to use? yes, so I have enabled non-free and tainted repos and downloaded any and all packages having to do with fglrx and radeon - same problem

3. I saw in errata to add xdriver=radeon or xdriver=fglrx to grub. I have not done this before so i just added it as kernel option at boot - same video problem
Does this get added in menu.lst?

4. Tried disabling desktop effects while watching video - same problem

This card works fine with MDV 2008.1 and PCLOS 2009.1 so I know drivers for this card work.

Any ideas to stop choppy video appreciated.

You have actually rebooted or at least logged out after you installed the proprietary driver or the other drivers?

Four youtube video, which browser and whichflash plugin are you using, and how did you install them?
Also you may want to have a look at viewtopic.php?f=34&t=880

Okay so using KDE desktop with FF 10.0.4. The only plugin I have is Shockwave Flash 11.2.r202 and have tried with and without enabled.

I enabled repos and downloaded flash-player-plugin and flash-playerplugin-kde 11.2.202.236 1.mga2.nonfree which seems to be only version available but your link recommends :

flash-player-plugin-kde-11.1.102.55-1.mga1.nonfree
flash-player-plugin-11.1.102.55-1.mga1.nonfree

FF shows no extensions and only shockwave flash installed.

How to install flash player? Link recommends NOT to use Adobe FlashPlayer however the flashplayer plugins listed above indicate they DO NOT contain the flash software but will download it from Adobe site. Confused. It's been years since I had to find libflashplayer.so buried somewhere in the .mozilla folder and link it to something else and change permissions and such. Did I miss something? Wasn't this taken care of years ago? Is Adobe abandoning Linux?

Apparently now after downloading Adobe flashplayer, shockwave flash is removed and Mozilla FF shows NO plugins or extensions of any type installed !!

Any help appreciated

Possibly this has morphed into a flashplayer issue. I did NOT read about any "unneeded packages" issue in the release notes during install, but read about skipping that portion of the install later in the Wiki. So ...

Reinstalled MGA 2 KDE from LiveCD and DID NOT remove unneeded drivers during install. I now have most of the desktop effects that WERE available during the LiveCD session but were lost after the FIRST install when i DID select "remove unneeded packages". I was blaming the ATI drivers for inability to view youtube videos but looks like it may be flash. However, having trouble installing it. Whether I get it from Adobe or uninstall Adobe version and and get flashplayer from MGA repos.... it's not working. May have research more and/or start new thread.

Thanks
