[SOLVED] MPEG-4 AAC decoder

[SOLVED] MPEG-4 AAC decoder

Postby RogerJ » May 16th, '12, 19:50

Apologies If I've missed something. Currently running Mageia2 RC and liking most of it. One niggle is I can't get sound working with video including using Xine,
VLC and Kaffiene. The error messages require an MPEG-4 AAC decoder plugin. Nothing doing in the repository. Any ideas on how to get this? Happy to wait until the 22nd though if this is going to be straightforward then. ;)

Please show the output of
Code: Select all
rpm -qa | grep -i faad

What you want is probably:

Apologies for tardy reply. All I got was libfaad2_2-2.7-2. Moving on to install Mageia 2 DVD to see if I have better luck.

And what was the problem with it? And why do you want to move to Mageia 2 for better luck?

Re: MPEG-4 AAC decoder

The problem is that when I play an mp4 file I'm getting a pop up saying an MPEG-4 AAC decoder is required. Clicking on the search button invites me to install the following:

gstreamer0.10-faad-0.10.22-3plf-plf2011.0 (32-bit)
gstreamer0.10-faad-0.10.22-4plf-plf2011.0 (32-bit)
gstreamer0.10-faad-0.10.21-3plf-plf2011.0 (32-bit)

Clicking for installation results in video playing without sound. (MOV files are playing with sound OK so not a driver issue). When I go to play another mp4 the same installation dialogue stats again suggesting the plf codecs are not installing.

I'm therefore thinking something is broken preventing the installation and that a fresh install might be appropriate and of course Mageia2 is now available.....................

You recognize those are Mandriva 2011.0 packages, and those might not work on Mageia at all?

Same problem here. I found that playing video mkv file (with AAC audio file in it) with Dragon Player is reproduced well, but fails with mplayer and vlc for the same error above. I extracted the audio but I can't convert to other formats for the same problem. This is the output of mplayer:

Also which error above are you exactly referring to?

VLC will surely not ask for an MPEG-4 AAC decoder plugin. Please show the output of
Code: Select all
rpm -qa | grep faad

I can't help you with Kaffeine or Xine though.

libfaad2_2-2.7-2.mga1
gstreamer0.10-faad-0.10.21-3.mga1.tainted
faad2-2.7-2.mga1

I must say that the problem only occurs when I'm playing videos with mplayer or vlc. Thanks

Ahh, you are still missing at least vlc from tainted, also mplayer, that might explain the problem. Please show the output of
Code: Select all
urpmq --list-media active

I thought so... Can you help me to fix it?

urpmq --list-media active:

Code: Select all
Core Release
Core Updates
Core Backports
Nonfree Release
Nonfree Updates
Nonfree Backports
Tainted Release
Tainted Updates
Tainted Backports

Thanks

Just do the following as root to disable backports and do a full update:
Code: Select all
urpmi.update --ignore backports

Code: Select all
urpmi --auto-update

And if there are some problems, just post the whole outputfrom the second command here.
If it goes through, try again to play your AAC audio file via VLC.

You don't have the necessary repositories enabled:

https://wiki.mageia.org/en/Installing_a ... rrectly.3F

You need the tainted repositories for task-codec-audio. You should probably disable the "Core Updates Debug" repo.

After enabling the tainted repositories, in a root terminal execute
Code: Select all
urpmi --auto-update
to update to the tainted versions of applications.
