Wierd message on boot about nokmsboot

Hello,

I have Mageia 1 installed in a new Toshiba notebook of this model:

toshiba satellite L750 12Z
http://ce.computers.toshiba-europe.com/ ... ID=1112775

Everything about video works perfectly, but in the middle of the boot process I get a very wierd text-mode message box which says:

Display Driver Issue
==============
The display driver currently configured requires you to use the nokmsboot boot option to prevent the KMS driver from being loaded in the boot process.

Which for me basically is greek =) I have no idea what he is talking about. So I have lots of questions:

1-> How to specify a boot option?
2-> How to get rid of this message box?
3-> Should I install another video driver maybe? How to do this?
4-> What is the KMS driver? And what is the problem with loading it during the boot process?

thanks,

1-> How to specify a boot option?

For testing/one off use, when you get to the first boot screen after switching the computer on, press the F3 key. This will bring up a text entry box, containing all the current boot options. Move the cursor to the end of these (left mouse click on the box, then use the right cursor key until it goes no further), and type in "nomodeset" (without the quotes). Press the Enter key, and Mageia should now boot.

To add it permanently, once you are logged in, start the Mageia Control Centre, select the Boot tab, click on "Set up boot system", click on the Next button, select the default boot entry, click on the Modify button, type in "nomodeset" in the Append text box, click on the Ok button, then click on the Finish button. This should take effect the next time you boot (if you press F3 at the boot screen, you should find "nomodeset" has already been added to the list of boot options).
2-> How to get rid of this message box?

By following the instructions above (I hope!)
3-> Should I install another video driver maybe? How to do this?

If everything still works perfectly, no need.
4-> What is the KMS driver? And what is the problem with loading it during the boot process?

KMS stands for "kernel mode switching". It means that the Linux kernel is responsible for the video frame buffer and for switching between video resolutions, instead of the graphics driver. This is a fairly recent addition to Linux, and not all graphics drivers have caught up with the new way of doing things.

Thanks, but the medicine seams to have been worse then the issue. At first boot with "nomodeset" everything was fine except that the resolution was very small and I set it permanently. Then after rebooting I changed to a higher resolution and bang =( X11 could no longer start and I would get only text-mode. So I removed the "nomodeset" and now X11 can start again but now my X11 ocupies only the left half of the screen and with completely wrong colors, nearly unusable =( I don't follow up why it is behaving like that now since I set the graphical server options in the "Mageia control center" to exactly like it was before...

wow, the linux terminal is also green and ocupying only half screen, but that only happens after boot, and the boot screens themselves were fine. I've never seen the text-mode get wrong like that.

So now I am temporarely back to the "nomodeset" and again only text mode is available even at automatic resolution =( crap ...

I wonder what was the original boot string, unfortunately I didn't save that. I only added/removed the nomodeset, but to be so problematic now I assume that maybe there was something to set the mode before and drakconf automatically removed it because it conflicts with nomodeset...

The message says to use the option "nokmsboot", not nomodeset. If both is the same then forget this post :)

Yep, it seams that somehow it removed "vga=788". Now I readded it, but still I am reduced to the half screen with wrong colors =(

I don't know, it looks like that only a fresh install could fix things now, but I'd rather not since I already configured so many thing...

I tryed to use nokmsboot but it didn't help anything. Anyway, right now I'd like simply to get back to a working X11 configuration =D

Please mark this thread as solved then, by editing the subject of the first post and prefixing it by [SOLVED].

It is not solved. I was simply happy that after reinstalling I had a working X11 again, but the error message at startup remains. The current state is exactly the same as when I first posted.

Have you tried booting in failsafe mode and using drakx11 as root to configure your graphics card?
