enabling hardware decoders on AMD RX7900XT on M9/10

How do I enable the hardware encoders (specifically, the X265 encoder) on my AMD RX7900XT? I have Flatseal installed with GPU Acceleration enabled. Using the X264 encoder with Handrake 1.10.2 (flatpak version) gives a speed of 300-400 fps. The X265 setting gives a speed of around 50 fps maximum. I tried the same file with the Windows verson of Handbrake (also V. 1.10.2) The Windows version has settings for both X264 and X265 that show up as AMD VCE. The speed using Handbrake v. 1.10.2 under Windows (X265) is 6-7x times faster than it is in Linux. Is this because of the AMD driver?

Thank you.

Hi there, what graphics driver do you currently use ? Also what output settings do you actually select in handbrake, those usually include details about the available codecs.
Also it would probably be easier to first compare in your actual system using e.g. ffmpeg directly, instead of trying that in a flatpak.
You would at least need to check the VA-API support in the flatpak environment of handbrake. Run the following as regular user:

Code: Select all
flatpak run --command=sh fr.handbrake.ghb
# then inside the sandbox
vainfo

AFAIK h.264 uses VA-API, but h.265 requires AMF which is only provided by the amdgpu-pro driver. This is also stated by the handbrake documentation: https://handbrake.fr/docs/en/latest/tec ... o-vcn.html
Also someone mentioned the flathub build does not have AMF support, but the flatpak build on their website https://handbrake.fr/downloads.php might have it.
