Can't change to Monitors default resolution

Hi,
My monitor was not automatically detected on install and now it uses a resolution of 1920 x 1000 but it should be 1920 x 1080. There are no presets that are available for this, is there a simple way to fix this? BTW I'm currently running Mageia via VirtualBox on a Win7 64bit OS.
thanks.

I noted your problem as similar to mine.
I have not been able to get the correct resolution on my Samsung SyncMaster. In fact Mageia1 doesn't detect even the monitor's name. I believed that it was only necessary to change xorg.conf for monitors and drivers to be removed or added at will. But this idea is obviously incorrect. Have you had better luck with solving your problem?

This is weird - I can't find 1920x1000 in the list but 1920x1080 is one of the standard resolutions and has been on the list all the time. Look at "Generic" and almost at the end of the list it says "Flat Panel 1920x1080".

I think the point being made is that monitor names and their resolutions seem not to be under control of the user. Its the same for graphic drivers. i have a nividia geforce 7025 and though i've blacklisted nouveau and configured the geforce 6100 to geforce360 with xfdrake it's still not right. A series 6 driver is not the same animal as the series 7 is it?

Both is only partially true. The resolution, when using automatic detection as you're currently doing, and IIRC even when giving specific modelines via xorg.conf, the proprietary nvidia driver is really picky about those. But actually this has never been a problem here.
For the latter part, geforce 6100 to geforce360 is the name for the nvidia driver series for the newest cards, it supports all those, that's why it's called like that.
If you're in doubt, please show the output of
- Code: Select all
rpm -qa | grep nvidia

I'm sure your right but it is unclear to me how, with your IIRC (Don't know what that is) and automatic detection it doesn't give a name to the monitor and wont allow a greater than 60hz for horiz mode. This makes it necessary to set the resolution lower to maintain a correct aspect ratio.
Your nvidia driver series can provide a high enough resolution to match the geforce 7025 proprietary driver from nvidia but it has to be set lower to make up for my original problem: the default monitor resolution is set incorrectly and I'm prevented from intervening by using xorg.conf by something; probably the IIRC you mentioned.

pls read the posting carefully; comeinandburn runs mageia in a VBox under a Win7 Host, so nvidia or noveau drivers are meaningless.

IIRC means "if i remember correctly". Maybe you want to have a look at
https://wiki.mageia.org/en/List_of_comm ... reviations
Could you please attach your /var/log/Xorg.0.log and your /etc/X11/xorg.conf? If the forum software doesn't allow you to attach those,
just copy it to your home directory and add a .txt extension to it.

No doubt I could supply these log files but it seems to me a little previous. Your use of mageia abbreviations of which I have no knowledge and your expectation that I should have studied them seems a little overbearing to me. I asked for an explanation of why I cannot control the system such as to correct improper or inaccurate detection of my monitor. Even the name of the monitor when entered into the xorg.conf file is not accepted.
I agree that an unnamed monitor is not an important thing in the scheme of things but it is when it cannot be set up correctly.
There is obviously a misconception on my part about the role of xorg.conf in mageia 1.
My apologies for not having studied the required list of abbreviations. And of course adding comments about nvidia or nouveau drivers which seem to annoy Alf. That was not my intention
I close the topic!

was my fault not to see that the original post is from Dec.12 and not answered until now. So it's not my intention to interupt the solving of your problem.

The list of abbreviations is not required, and that is no mageia abbreviation, it's commonly used in forums, IRC (internet relay chat) and on mailing lists. I also did not expect that you should have "studied" them, it was merely a hint to a cheatsheet if you encounter such commonly used abbreviation again and wonder what it stands for.
I excuse myself for using such an abbreviation if that offended you.
But if you don't supply the needed information to diagnose the problem, you can't really expect us to help you, we just can't help you without that information.
