Solved --System settings menu is black

Solved --System settings menu is black

Postby leon244 » Sep 13th, '24, 16:53

I have done a recent install on a new machine and have had a lot of trouble with video. I finally got it settled but when I open the systemsettings app the left hand menu section is black and I can see nothing. Interestingly I can click within the black area and sometime hit on a menu item and it comes up.
I have played with graphic settings to no avail (other than to make things worse)
I have tried multiple Nvidia drivers from the graphical set up and only the 550.100 seems to be stable
Current set up is
Mageia9 kernel 6.6.43
NVidia driver 550.100-1 (for 745 and later)
Asustek monitor set up as "plug'n'play
Graphics card GEFORCE RTX 4070 super

Any ideas or suggestions are welcome
Thanks in advance

Hi there, with what graphic settings did you play in particular? Also the more recent nvidia cards (745 and later) are only supported by one driver (nvidia-current), you can't try multiple drivers for those, not sure what you selected there.
FWIW, I have an RTX 4070 too and it works out of the box, both with the proprietary nvidia driver and also with the free one.

Your description about systemsettings sounds a bit like a broken OpenGL setup which can happen if you manually installed an nvidia driver from their website.

I tried different drivers but went back to 745 or later from the graphics menu. I am using nvidia_current. But I get unstable results if I don't disable Render and hardware acceleration. My nvidia install was from Mageia and not the nvidia site. I am set up with dual monitors. I will keep searching. Thx

What different drivers did you try, because there is basically only nvidia 745 or later and the free nouveau driver?
Also, what does it actually mean if you say unstable ?

I had tried other drivers listed under the Nvidia list, but in the end you were correct I just set everything back to plug 'n' play or 'auto' and let the system set up teh monitors and chose the 745 driver and it all is working now. I don't know why it didn't work at first, but I am functioning now.
Thanks for your help

For even newer versions, if you like, check out nonfree/updates_testing/ for "nvidia-current" 550.107 and even "nvidia-newfeature" 560.35
