Currently I running an upto date Mageia 8 Plasma.

After changing my monitor I ran the Setup Graphical Server module in Mageia Control Centre.
I left the screen type as plug and play and then ran Test.
Test provided a rainbow of vertical lines.
I the exited and rebooted.
After reboot the login screen hung up, after I entered my password, with no keyboard access. The mouse still worked.
Cannot login to IcoWM session.
When I turn the computer of it goes off very quickly without having to hold the start button down.
I can login as other users as well as root on plasma desktop.

After running the recovery mode at boot and and then “systemctl default”
the command “systemctl isolate graphical.target” authenticating as root gives
Password:Failed to start graphical.target : Connection timed out
polkit-agent-helper-1: pan_authenticate_failed. Authentication failure.

Any ideas for what I can try next?

FWIW, best never run the test mode. It sometimes leaves behind an ~/.Xauthority file in your home which belongs to root, see e.g. https://bugs.mageia.org/show_bug.cgi?id=20835
In failsafe/recovery mode, login on a tty either as your user or root, and delete that file.

Thank you. Removed .Xauthority file and logged in as normal. Many thanks again.
