[SOLVED]Mageia 8 can't boot after welcome screen.

Postby RockBed » Jan 19th, '22, 19:57

I'm new here with Mageia.
I successfully installed Mageia 8 to my computer and tried to boot it in UEFI mode.Well the welcome screen works well with beautiful blue GUI.But after I press enter to boot system, the monitor stopped working and said"no signal",which is a situation never happened before when I use other distros. The computer is still running so I guess maybe it is the GPU driver or monitor option s that's the problem. My computer uses i5-10400 CPU with a UHD630 integrated GPU.And my monitor is connected to my computer by VGA.
I let system automatic select the driver.
So,What driver should I choose while installing?Or did I do some options wrong?

Hi there, you can't really choose that AFTER the installation. You'd have to start the installer in UEFI mode, you cannot really change this afterwards. So how did you install?
Have a look at our wiki for comparison: https://wiki.mageia.org/en/Installing_o ... boot_media

Apart from that, does that mean that you don't even see the bootloader at all? If so, you'd have to reinstall, or try to avoid booting in UEFI mode, as mentioned above.
Or do you see the login manager where you need to choose your user and then login? If so, which desktop environment did you install ?

Also, you usually don't need to select a graphics driver during installation, it should pick the proper one.

1.,While installing,I boot USB drive in UEFI mode
2.I can see a bootloader with GUI after turning on the computer. But after choosing to boot Mageia in the bootloader, the problem happened.I can't see a login screen or any thing belongs to desktop environment.System created a ESP partitions,so I guess legacy mode is not supported.

Is this a multimonitor setup? If yes, try to disconnect the second monitor prior boot. Are you able to test another connection method like HDMI, DP, DVI,...?

I had problems once with a grub(?) version where i had to type the user password blind, because the login window was completely black. This was on two different machines and distributions but both with Nvidia cards.

single or multiple monitors?

so, when the welcome screen (grub2 boot select screen?) is displayed, have you tried "Advanced options for Mageia" and choose "recovery mode"?
this is a text mode boot and will often give clues to startup failures.

you can also press "e" and then navigate to the end of the line that has "splash quiet" and delete them. ( use <, > ,^ , v and backspace or delete keys)
"ctrl +x" will then start the boot. again, a text mode boot and will often give clues to a cause of startup failure.

what was your install media?

Single monitor.
The problem exists on both of Classical and Live CD version.

did a google search for this and it appears to be last years model.
how old is your machine.

if you purchased it after ~mid last year,(after the install media was released) the kernel is older than your machine and the cpu is likely unsupported.

there are ways to install Magiea for such new machines, (relatively), but they can be involved.

When you do an update of all packages (with online connection) whilst installation from DVD you will have an up to date Kernel 5.15.23.

@RockBed: Did you setup the online media whilst installation from DVD/USB and did you update the packages at the end of the installation? If not, you can insert the DVD/USB-Stick again and chose "Update Mageia" (instead of "Install") and add additional medias according: https://doc.mageia.org/installer/8/en/content/software.html#d4e692
At the end of installation aggree to use the online media for update according: https://doc.mageia.org/installer/8/en/content/installUpdates.html

This will likely rule out if your CPU is supported.

Thanks for the replies!
The problem is solved with the old motherboard replaced.Because the old one had no HDMI I/O,which made my monitor unstable.
I tried to install Mageia after installing the new motheboard.Fortunately, nothing wrong happened this time.
So I guess Mageia Installation Tool was totally working nice. What is confusing me is the software or hardware error of the motherboard.
I'm glad to get in the world of Mageia and communicate with friendly open source software fans the forum

PS:MSI,YES!
