[SOLVED] Which driver GM206 [GeForce GTX 960]

Hi,

I've got this GM206 [GeForce GTX 960] card. I've tried to install, but I don't really know which driver will give me plasma loaded.
Please forgive me, but I'm not familiar with geforce cards, I've used Intel and old radeons...

- Nouveau gives me something like: nouveau mmio read fault
- If I tried to install nvidia 635+ v460 (XFdrake) it gives test screen correctly but after booting it kills grub, if i restore grub and start gives screen and boots but X11/plasma didn't came. I've rebooted, then it started to do something with nvidia_current and installing, but the same end - no x11/plasma...

so first question is which is the correct driver for GTX 960?

I think I try the correct drivers, but I give up for today...

x11-driver-video-nvidia-current would be what I would like, I've tried v430.26 and v460.32.03 too. v430.26 removed installed kernels and installed one for itself, but I couldn't start sddm....
I search a little, maybe I have to blacklist nouveau, but this for next day.... If you have any opinion can be helpful.
Is it possible that grub went to fall because my bios saves bootsec and it is in legacy mode boot from hdd? (So no EFI boot installed and enabled to disk)

thank you in anticipation

Yeah... the README.txt in x11-driver-video-nvidia-current is helps a lot... There is a lot of information...

First, this card is listed at supported products, So I'm sure I would like to install this. :-) Why is so hard to find in search engine or on ndivia.com that which packages is relevant to this card? As I know near nothing from this it was hard....

The answer is that you only need to run drakx11, select proprietary driver and the correct one will already be selected, and the respective packages will be installed. No need to make it more difficult than it actually is. Also nvidia themselves would have no information what the actual package names for each and every driver for every linux distribution is. For your card that would nvidia-current, which seems to already be selected per your description.

Apart from that, your other descriptions are pretty vague: What does "but after booting it kills grub, if i restore grub and start gives screen and boots" actually mean? There's no relation to grub.

Ty,
I will try....

GRUB case: I haven't inspected yet, but it is Minimal BASH run on next startup.... Then I have to reinstall grub to get back menu...

I don't know too much, but I have read somewhere that maybe nvidia driver need efi partition to open firmware or something. It's not clear to me yet. so I'm bit confused now. I now backlisted nouveau to load by default...

I've just would like to play with WarThunder with better experience than with Intel...

Code: Select all
uname -a
Linux localhost 5.10.14-desktop-1.mga7 #1 SMP Sun Feb 7 19:36:25 UTC 2021 x86_64 x86_64 x86_64 GNU/Linux

I plugged 2 monitors, one for i630 and for nvidia. Primary display was hd630 and bios started with igfx....
just nouveau was installed, dual display was shown while booting, black screen on nvidia when plasma started...
(prev. I have blacklisted nouveau)
I run drakx11 from console as root, and it installed everything.
I've restarted, went to bios and changed first vga to slot2 where is nvidia now, and now I have only nvidia working, As I wanted....
Ty

PS: this time I haven't got grub falirure, so maybe 2 drivers cause something....

it was the next to do the same on second mga7 install.
- It has EFI boot
- It started well with nouveau driver, but system info/grap/opengl said that intel is the 3D card.
- I have banned nouveau as readme said.
- rebooted with intel graphic
- ran drakx11 from console and selected 635+ card
- reboot again with nvidia and worked well.

So I can realize there maybe some errors or chance to fail:
- nouveau may need to disable to autoload
- if I run drakx11 from console finishes the install and if I run from MCC or you set from XFdrake it just download and extract the packages...
I think one of them can cause the grub error I have experienced...

I marked as solved...
