I am opening a new topic as suggested by isadora as I mistakenly posted into an already solved issue.

I was wondering if anyone can help me with a problem with the nVidia drivers.
Last week I stuffed up my #7.1 desktop (I upgraded from #6.1 to #7.1 last year - didn't install) system. Not being very linux literate I did try and figure things out for my self for 3 or 4 days but couldn't. So yesterday I re-installed 7.1. - and again today (I screwed up Grub yesterday after finally getting a working system!). (Aslo a side issue - both times I re-installed I got the same msg right at the end of the install:

- what does this mean???) Could this error have something to do with the nVidia problem below?

Anyway, my problem is with the video driver - my display is jumping around like it's being shocked - especially when I scroll a page or when my screen saver comes on. I tried to specify to use the noveau driver but it seems to always load the nVidia driver I think.

That message at the end of the install - what medium did you use to install, what packages did you select, and did you install updates during the installation ?

How/why did you screw grub after the 7.1 re-installation?

What does that mean "is jumping around like it's being shocked" - can you provide some more details? Apart from that, is the display working normally?
Also, how is your monitor attached, what monitor do you use, and what resolution does it display currently? Please also add the output of

Install from DVD. As I said I had #6.whatever installed and just upgraded to #7.1 so I've never had to install #7.1 from my DVD before.

As for grub stuff-up, not knowing what the heck I was doing. I remembered (or read in another nVidia problem somewhere) about having to have nokmsboot defined, so I defined it in boot in MCC (not noticing it was already there!). Anyway, on boot (I can't remember why) I edited the entry for Mageia and found 2 nokmsboot options defined. I deleted 1 and pressed enter - hey presto, system wouldn't boot, except into grub. I found somewhere some cmds to try to recover but grub couldn't even find my linux boot file system for some reason. So being not very good at linux, I chose to cut my losses and re-install, just to have a system.

The display "jumping around" (not a very good description, sorry). When I scroll a page, or even type things on some screens, the current screen blinks and a display of an open task is partly displayed - mostly at the top and side of the screen. On the screensaver and screen lock screens - the display flickers constantly (once a second) - on screen saver - displaying some sort smaller rectangle outside of which displays a larger rectangle showing part of the open task behind it. (I can upload photos if you'd like to see the effect. And yes, apart from that, the display works normally.

So going on this output display, I am running on nouveau. I also noticed whilst I was in MCC, and in the output above, my BenQ monitor is identified as "BenQ M2200HD" (which it isn't). I don't know why that is, I was sure that my monitor previously, (before my system stuffed up the first time) was just Plug'n'Play. Don't know if that matters.

As for nouveau, I tried to specify it under xorg in MCC. I forgot to mention a few times when I re-booted, I thought the system was hanging only to be presented with the dialog box, "you have to reboot for the change of display driver" (or something like that) I can't remember whether I had been trying to use the nVidia drives at the time or not, everything is a blur lately - too many things have happened.

So what about this file: x11-server-common-1.20.8-1.mga7.x86_64? I just tried to re-install my VPN and it failed with the msg: cannot install due to unsatisfied libxkbcommon-x11.
Might these two problems be related?

Yes, although you might need to install the package xrandr for that - but that should be installed by default.

Yes, it should only be Plug&Play. Selecting a monitor will usually hardcode the modelines in xorg.conf and they can interfere with the display, if they don't exactly match your monitor.
And that can be adapted via xrandr on the fly, hence why it's usually a bad idea to put that directly in xorg.conf.
I'd say run drakx11 again, and as Monitor select Plug&Play.

Please, one problem at a time. And libxkbcommon-x11 is not provided by any Mageia package, so that is normal - you will probably need to install that via urpmi --allow-nodeps

Please reinstall x11-server-common so that the libgl link is not missing anymore. As root:

Sorry for overloading you with other problems when I mentioned installing the VPN, I only mentioned it as I thought it may be related the script failure problem. Anyway, would this be the command to use:

(I don't know what I'm doing at the CLI for urpmi so need to ask.

As for changing the monitor to Plug'n'Play in drakx11, It seems I can't. It seems as though the BenQ monitor is hard coded or something! Although I am positive I selected Plug'n'Play (I always do!) when I did both re-installs:

That last part is pretty clear, and self-explanatory, no? re-installation of a package only works if that package is already installed, if not, then you only need a normal installation

No. libxkbcommon-x11 is the package / rpm requires tag that we want to ignore, when installing name_of_your_vpn_client_package_here.rpm - that is what --allow-nodeps does.

Okay a few things.

I have absolutely no idea what is going on. Today I booted up my desktop and logged in and the display is stable!!!!! (Well it is now - 12:30pm OZ time, and since I logged in). Nothing has changed, all of the settings are exactly the same as thy have been since I re-installed the system! No jittering, no scrolling issues, no screen saver issues!

The Plug'n'Play still has BenQM200HD defined and I can't change it, but as I said above, the display is stable at the moment. ?

I executed the cmd for installing x11-server-common:

Set a proper locale. Try with localedrake - https://doc.mageia.org/mcc/7/en/content ... ocaledrake
It's an older bug, that might still occur if you select an invalid locale combination. See https://bugs.mageia.org/show_bug.cgi?id=3723 for details.

Looking at the prompt, you were in the /home/myles folder. You need to change into the Downloads folder first, if you want to run it like this. Or specify the path directly, like this:

I answered 'y' to see what happens.

It wasn't working, it couldn't connect to the local server. Then while I was trying to type in something, my system suddennly rebooted for no reason!

Anyway, now the VPN has connected to the local server.
