Folks,

Installed the latest round of updates yesterday and now I can't boot onto my desktop. It keeps rebuilding the nvidia-current driver every time it boots.

I tried uninstalling and reinstalling from the command line and that got me a bit further in that it no longer tells me there is a clash in drivers. However, it is now hanging at

Hold until boot process finishes up.

If I reboot, every time it's trying to rebuild the nivida drivers.

nouveau doesn't work for me (it never has worked well for me, but it doesn't work at all at the moment).

I'm assuming other people must have come across this by now. If so, how did you fix it please?

I have no idea what to do or what information to give, so let me know and I can post anything relevant. I *really* urgently need to get into my machine, this is stopping me working.

It would help if you would at least mention what graphics card you have, and what nvidia/kernel packages you have installed, for a starter.

You don't have any Mageia packages for the nvidia driver itself installed. How did you try previously to uninstall/reinstall it ? Maybe you should try via drakx11 again ...

Ah, that's because I uninstalled them so I could at least work with one screen using the vesa driver. It means I'm three screens down (I have a quad output graphics card) and severely handicapped by it, but I can at least do some work, I did that using drakconf from the command line by doing ALT - CTL - F2 to get another login to the ocmmand line/

I did then try reinstalling via MCC and setting up the graphical server, but had exactly the same issues, so I once again got rid of nvidia to give me one screen to work with.Would you like me to reinstall nvidia have it not boot and rerun those commands? More than happy to do that if it'll point us in the right direction.

BTW, I was wondering why I didn't have the usual option of booting in to older kernels, I've just been into MCC and bootsystem and it says I have no bootloader set up!

Could that have any bearing on it? Should I run it to set it back up properly?

Well, if you don't have the driver installed, how do you think the troubleshooting for the driver is supposed to work ?

And for the bootloader, please open a separate thread. You're also missing at least the information what bootloader you're using, please add that there, too.

Well, I re-re-reinstalled the nvidia driver and this time the "auto build for all dkms..." message stayed on for much longer and it's booted OK. So, goodness knows what's gone on there. I assume the first few times I tried it, it wasn't running long enough to build the new driver into the kernel and falling over? Why on the tenth or eleventh time of trying it did work though I am at a loss.

Did you interrrupt / cancel it when it was still running, maybe because it was running that long ?

Absolutely not. I left it for about half an hour at one point.

What was happening initially is that the message where it says building the driver would be in progress witht he red asterisk going left and right, then it would start a second, identical message for a short while - again with the red asterisk bobbing left and righ - , then lots more information would scroll down the screen after a relatively short time of driver building.
The last time the driver building didn't spawn a second example although it did scroll off before the red asterisk stopped going side to side and the green "OK" did not appear for that task.

You're talking about what happens during boot here?

Apart from that, you currently have ~20 different kernels installed, you might want to reduce those to say 2 or 3 most recent versions, that might help with the time it takes to install / build this.

Fair point. I hadn't realised there were so many because I'm no longer getting a list of all the old kernels at boot like we used to. I think it's the same on my laptop, although I rarely boot that as it usually just comes out of hibernation.

Well, before you mentioned it hung during installation, although installation happens when you install the packages.
Then you jumped to hanging during boot, which is a totally different thing, hence me asking.

I was wondering if you with help me with a problem with the nVidia drivers.
Last week I stuffed up my desktop #7.1 (I upgraded from #6.1 to #7.1 last year) system. Not being very linux literate I did try and figure things out for my self for 3 or 4 days but couldn't. So yesterday I re-installed 7.1. - and again today (I screwed up Grub yesterday after finally getting system!). (Aslo a side issue - both times I re-installed I got the same msg right at the end of the install

Anyway, my problem is with the video driver - my display is jumping around like it's being shocked - especially when I scroll a page or when my screen saver comes on. I tried to specify to use the noveau driver but it seems to always load the nVidia driver I think.
